I just went for the X10 myself because it fit my needs a little better. Its smaller, the faster lens IMO largely negates the larger sensor advantage of the G1X. The X10 optical viewfinder is far far more usable though still not ideal since you can't tell anything about AF confirmation looking through it. The G1X does have the swivel screen which definitely has its uses. I preferred the ergonomics of the X10 myself, but that I'm sure is a personal thing.
The major bummer of the X10 is the white orb issue. I figure I'll give it a whirl and if it does end up being bothersome I'll return it.
One of the biggest remaining questions on the G1X is the lens performance. I wasn't too impressed with the one I got to try, however looking at the samples Imaging Resource posted, those look much better. If you are considering this camera, definitely wait and see what the reviews say in this regard.

Must be, I didn't add it

Most cameras have the date feature but you need to enable it. Personally I hate it as it's hard to remove later...

Hmmm, looked through my G10 manual again and couldn't find any mention and don't remember any such on my previous Gs. Just an academic question; I'm with you in that I'd never use it.
I tried P&S several times, never worked due to small sensor and shutter lag. So, I would go with Canon's larger sensor. Small sensor just did not work for me. Better yet, get sony nex or fuji Xpro.

its purely a camera shop so getting a new handset for the phone takes second place to taking care of the customers who walk in the door, and they do take good care of their customers
I'm interested to see what the RAW files are like when Adobe release an upgrade to LR which allows me read them. The Jegs aren't great in their own right but when compared to test shots from other compacts in similar conditions you can see the step up and the possibilities of this camera.

I recently picked up the Fuji X10 and I'm loving it so far.
I often head out with the X10 plus my 5d and a couple of primes. I use the X10 for detail shots due to the greater dof and its sharpness edge to edge, I use the 5d for shots where I want subject isolation. For detail shots I get better results with the X10 than the 5d.

I have the G12 and like it a lot for the way I use it. Just keep in mind that its view finder is nearly useless. From the preview seen so far it looks like it will be the same on the G1X
True, viewfinders on the G series are poor, but it is possible to learn to compensate. Just do a few tests (on something rectangular like a picture frame) at different zoom settings and distances and you'll see what the VF isn't showing you. YMMV.

Looking at the ISO progression in the test images on the DPR site, it seems the jpeg noise reduction is quite heavy. I'm assuming that since the G1X sensor is the same pixel pitch as the 7D that the raw processing will be similar and the images will clean as well. The lens is the big unknown at this point. For the price it should be better than its G ancestors but how does it compare to its EOS relatives?
IMO higher ISO performance is impressive, but not much else; certainly less than I anticipated.
DPR test sample page has a comment
"Note: The G1 X's lens is slightly soft towards the corners at the close focus distance used for this test. We would recommend looking at our real-world samples before drawing firm conclusions in this regard."
At this point there's not enough to pull me from my G10 which almost never leaves ISO100.
seems like it's not that impressive, just a day time outdoors p&s. a very nice day time outdoors p&s... you may be better off looking else where. i like the jpegs from my x100 but the focus is bit crap really and its a little fragile when it comes to moisture but i did buy it for night time indoor use, instead of a 50 1.4. as an outdoors camera the v1 looks very intersting due to its speed.
The DPR G1X studio comparison shots looked pretty good to me and I like DPR's new moveable comparator. I set the other 3 windows up with my other cameras G10, 7D, and 5D2. I read their soft focus note but I frankly didn't see it. In fact the 5D2 looked softest but thats subject to the lens used. The G1X looked a little over sharpened in some instances, even raw. Noise performance is exactly as expected, almost identical to the 7D, slightly more noise than the 5D at higher ISO, and blows the G10 away. The shadow detail looked better than the G10 even at ISO 100. ISO 400 looked great and 800 good which is a big improvement over the G10. I'm happy with the results.

When the G1X was first announced I thought it would be a great upgrade to my G-12, which I use mainly for underwater photography.. Examples here, http://chrisd.net/y4NYgZ (hit the "original" size for real detail, all shots taken with the G-12). If you look at the very first shot of the tiny (only about an inch wide) Hermit Crab the 1cm macro focus of the G-12 with no add on lenses used really captures some great shots. I'm not sure I would get that from the G1X.
I have been fighting with myself over getting an underwater housing for my 7D since I already own it and all necessary (and favorite) lenses needed for UW shooting. The fight is that I already know how well the 7D works underwater, but because of all the extra weight and lenses I would have to add a good sized Pelican Case to my already weighty dive gear bag, clothing and carry-on bag.
I have an order placed for the G1X housing (first one to be delivered from Ikelite) as well as pre-order for the G1X but I'm just not seeing that the G1X is going to be much better than what I'm already getting from the G-12 for UW use. Especially considering the almost "non" macro capabilities of the G1X (at least for my purposes). The video function would be great to have since you can zoom it with autofocus which isn't available on the G-12.
I compared the G1X shots on Engadget to the 7D and G-12 and just don't see anything that would reach out and grab me like most other new camera models that hold the amount of so-called improvements that the G1X should offer.
Maybe I'm all wrong (which I hope I am) because the G1X would be a great UW camera since it would involve just a change in UW housings but everything else would remain basically the same (except for a slight bump in overall weight but nothing compared to the 7D housing, lenses, ports, domes, etc).
Noise performance is exactly as expected, almost identical to the 7D, slightly more noise than the 5D at higher ISO, and blows the G10 away.

I certainly agree about G1X higher ISO --- I too ran the G10 and 7D ... with the 550 in place of the 5D ...
But having shot a few macro with the G10 I was surprised by the poor performance @100 in RAW ... and even more surprised by the difference between the 550 and 7D with the 50 1.4 ...
Did you happen to pull up the individual shot specs? (lower right icon)
I use my G10 for UW shots all the time and its relatively compact UW housing is great. I know the G1X housing (from Canon) will be larger and more expensive ($400 pre-order from B&H). Don't know how it compares to Ikelite. An SLR housing is way out of my size and expense league. UW work requires higher ISO so that part should be a real upgrade to the G12.
The loss of macro is another concern. I'm already assuming another $200 for a 250D closeup filter. That couldn't be used under water, obviously. This is getting to be a very pricey upgrade to my G10 so I'm also weighing options carefully. The IQ, including lens performance, had better be very close to SLR performance to be worthwhile. So far it seems pretty good but I'm still researching.

No I haven't, thanks. I'll look for it - I'm sure I'll compare again
