p.1 #1 · From Palm Springs to Reno

Looking for a precious word of wisdom from this Forum.
I applied as volunteer for the Photo Festival at Palm Springs, and it seems like I was accepted.
Now, I am planning to be there for Sunday-Wednesday, and then drive from Palm Springs to Reno, shooting everything in sight
Itinerary is not firm yet, no hotel reservation and plane tickets yet, but here is an approximate route.
As there will be waxing gibbous night on Thursday, April 5th, I want to be either at DV, or Lone Pine for this celestial event - and may be at Mono Lake for the next night.
Any ideas? Valuable tips?
Thanks!

Don't overlook Joshua Tree NP, either while you are in PS or on your way out. Lots of spur roads from 395 into the Sierra Nevada, but who knows which will be open this year. Hot Springs near Mammoth are interesting, if you can get there. Bodie Ghost Town is great, but can you get there? I think I would concentrate on DV, Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe. There is a web site for US 395 Tourism, Google it.

Thank you, Stan.
I will be staying in Palm Springs for four days, and will definitely have a chance to go to Joshua Tree. I also want to rent a full-sensor camera for this trip as mine is too noisy for the night photography.

both weds and thurs of that week ought to be great for shooting the full moon with sunset light on foreground features. joshua tree is close enough to ps that you could likely make it for a moon session. and then mesquite dunes in dv the following night would be great.

I would not plan too much on Bodie. Dirt road and it isn't plowed. If there is snow its probably not passable.

I hate the cold and especially cold at night. I think I would spend as much time as possible in DV. Lone Pine was really plenty cold when I was there a few weeks ago. 5200' with night temps in the 20's.

Even here in Mojave, I have no desire to venture out to shoot at night. It is 6pm, barely dark but there is a wind and temps will soon be in the 40's.

Thank you, Derek, Phil and Jim. Looked at 395.com - lots of information!
Bodie is three miles on dirt road - so if it's dry and passable... is there anything worth than Racetrack drive?
Jim, I am not afraid of cold. First, it will be two months from now, so it will get warmer. Second, I lived for 30 years in Siberia, where an average temperature of six winter months is -4F, so I'll survive 20'th.
I will have only four days or less, so I need to control my appetite for adventure and plan carefully
