p.1 #1 · Price question Voigtlander SL Series I 125/2.5 APO-Lanthar

What's a decent price for a Voigtlander SL Series I 125/2.5 APO-Lanthar with Canon mount ? I found one in a shop in perfect condition.
And how does it work on new Canon DSLR bodies?

Recent average eBay sales for both EF (manual focus) mount and Nikon mount are about $1850 US, for near mint condition. The last eBay sale I noticed for one in [E] condition was way back in 2009, for $910. There was one listed at Adorama in [E] to [E+] condition last month for $2450 (not Canon mount, probably Nikon), it seems to be gone now.

I expect it would work very nicely on a modern Canon DSLR. Let me borrow it for a while, and I'll show you some sample photos.

There are a few EF mount on ebay selling above 2.5K. Most of the Nikon mount goes above 2K.

The Canons, factory chipped and ready to go, tend to fetch somewhat less than the F-mounts (never quite understood why, especially since they're rarer); the ones I've seen sold in the past 2 years by private sellers go for ~$1700-1900. The ones on eBay are often posted by Hong Kong sellers who apparently trade between themselves to either rig prices upwards or are trying to cleanse cash by these transaction. These have long exceeded US$2000 for some time.

Or from mainland China in which case, caveat emptor.

Over at the website, "mflenses.com" where a crowd-sourcing of CV 125 production numbers was started, a single lens was found to have been "sold" five times in two years.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Maybe I go to the shop tomorrow and try it. It looks like a brand new lens. And I think I will get it for about $ 1600-1700 if I like to buy it

What's the difference between SL I and SL II lenses with Canon mount. I have the 40 and 90 SL II with Canon mount.

Nothing, really.
But if I recall correctly, only the 125 came in EOS mount for the SLI's.

If you can nab it for $1600, you wont regret it. It is one of the few lenses I own that actually lives up to the hype. Truly special in terms of resolution, bokeh, color rendition and 1:1 macro. I use it even more as a short tele as I do as a macro.

And if the prevailing wisdom is correct regarding Cosina and Zeiss' probable understanding, it isn't likely to see the light of day as an SLII.

Lars,

For a rather long thread on the V-APO-Lanthars, see this link - http://forum.mflenses.com/voigtlaender-sl-apo-lanthar-serials-and-production-volumes-t24547.html

I had also copied the stats below, probably resulting from that thread, and there was a request for serial numbers by an FM member in this forum a year or more ago, adding to this info. If I could remember who did this work, I'd give him a full citation. The author is called "Esox lucius" in that MFlenses site forum, and this info comes from the first post of the thread, and it's still active recently.

"
For those of you who have not run into my project on other photography forums: I have crowdsourced a study collecting serial numbers. Goal of research is to establish understanding of true production volumes for the discontinued Cosina-made Voigtländer SL lenses.

You can contribute by posting to this topic or sending me a private message, including information like this:

75/2.5 in Canon FD/EF mount serial is 9031444
90/3.5 in N/Ai-S mount serial is 91601xx
125/2.5 in P/K-A mount serial is 9121214
180/4 in P/M42 mount serial is 9340305
etc. etc.

You can sensor out the last one or two digits if you feel so. I need more serials to improve on accuracy, so I greatly appreciate any help any SL lens owner can contribute with. Here are some preliminary findings apply to discontinued SL series, SL II still in production is another story.

Some lenses are engraved "Japan" while others "Lens made in Japan". Some are machine engraved in a precise fashion, some have engraving where digits are not properly lined up. The serial number always starts with a 9 and is always 7 digits long. The 2nd digit is manufacturing year.

Year 2000
75/2.5 in FD/EF, N/Ai-S, M/MD and C/Y mounts, batch of 3000
90/3.5 in N/Ai-S, O/OM, P/M42, batch of 1000 (?)

Year 2001
125/2.5 in N/Ai-S mount, batch of 1000-1200
125/2.5 mostly in P/K-A mount (some M/MD), batch of 1000
125/2.5 in FD/EF mount, batch of 1000-1500
125/2.5 for all mounts (incl. Canon & Nikon), batch of 1000
90/3.5 for N/Ai-S and P/M42, batch of 2000

Year 2002
90/3.5 for P/K-A & P/M42 mount, batch of 1300-2000
125/2.5 in N/Ai-S mount, batch of 1000

Year 2003
180/4 in N/Ai-S and P/K-A mount, batch of 1000-1500
180/4 in O/OM, P/K-A and P/M42 mount, batch of 1000-1500
90/3.5 in LTM mount, 500-1000

Years 2004-2005
No lenses were manufactured during this time period. Cosina was evidently in pre-production stage for Zeiss glass.

Years 2006-2009
40/2 in several mounts
58/1.4 in several mounts
20/3.5 in several mounts

Of the SL I lenses, Minolta/MD and Contax/Yashica mount lenses are by far the rarest of the rare, manufactured probably in hundreds at most.

Nikon users might be interested in the production volume for the discontinued apochromatic family in N/Ai-S mount:

180/4 APO exists in 700 (possibly up to 1000) copies
90/3.5 APO exists in 1000 to 1500
125/2.5 APO exists in 2200 to 2500 copies

125/2.5 APO in Canon FD/EF is a batch of 1500 total.

This lens is beautiful on my 5D (and newly acquired 5D II). Just an absolute joy to use and there's a "je ne sais quoi" about the images it produces.

The Canon's may be rarer in production numbers but tended to appear more often for resale.

Lars

It is a great lens you won't be disapointed. I liked my EF version so much that I searched for over a year before I found an F mount at a reasonable price to use on my F mount cameras and u4/3 cameras so I coulld have aperture control. I use both often.

I bought it because I needed a macro lens but it works so wonderfully at all distances, a real rarity among macros. I also use the Leica 100 Makro APO, but that one sees mostly macro use. I traveled through Italy last year with the Nikkor 24-70 and CV 125 & 180. The 125 accounted for well over 50% of the shots, none macro.

Thanks everybody for great info and replies. I suppose that I have to go back to the shop and see if I can get a good price on the lens then

Does Voigtlander repair/service the lens if I need that in the future?

How good is your CV 180 compared to 125?
I already have 125 but I'm dying to find 180....

About the lightest, most compact, high performing medium tele I've used. Contrasty, true color, sharp at f/4, improving by 5.6 and when used at its MFD and near subjects, a breeze to focus despite the dark screen>> f/4 after all (the box it comes in plainly states "Close Focus" so I guess they mean it). It tends to get a little tricky focusing on objects at or near infinity; twitchy insofar as focus is lost for these subjects with the slightest motion or breath.
Compared to the 125 it's perhaps a smidgen less sharp, colors to my eye aren't quite as saturated or bokeh as 'creamy' and also not the near-perfect APO as the 125, with traces of color in high contrast areas.

Unlike the 125, there's no apparent reason we shouldn't see an SLII version.
