Just picked up a Promaster ring flash (RL60) the other day, so here's a couple dog shots, plus one from our recent trip to Banff. Let me know what you guys think.
Welcome to the forum, Matt. I see it's your first post.
Congrats on the ringflash purchase. You will find it useful, but it does put the circular catchlight in the eyes, as shown in #1. To me that looks unrealistic and should be avoided.
When you frame your dog pics, including the nose is usually best. To me, these two look odd because the nose is cut off. An exception might be when highlighting the eyes.
Showing a collage may be nice, but the top 3 pics are very small, so if you want critique on those pics, its best to show them at the normal sizes.
Ct, I keep seeing people do these 'collages' on their phones and I quite liked the look, so I just resized the four pictures and pasted them onto one file using photoshop.
Jim, thanks for the welcome! I was a member years ago, but have since forgotten my username... The ring flash is great and buying it was sort of an attempt to shoot more (university keeps a person very busy), but I would have to agree with Matt on this one- I really like the catchlight in the eyes. I do agree with the bit about the nose, I guess it'd be like awkwardly leaving out a person's limb from the frame.
