According to Canon, the lens hood for the new 24-70 is the EW-88C, which is one of their "flower petal" designs. (It's longer than the EW-88 (non-C) that goes with the 16-35L, but it's still shorter than the one that came with the old lens.)

That is a nice looking hood. I guess Canon would have coated and designed the lens in such a way that a smaller hood could be used, without too much impact to IQ.
82mm which is a huge bummer in my opinion. So far I've been able to keep all my Canon glass at 77mm except my 100L macro. Was even one of my considerations in choosing the 17-40 over the 16-35.
