Which one would you buy? I'll likely be using the Sony 18-55 mm lens and some older Nikon lenses on my camera. Can someone please summarize the discussion as to the merits/demerits of each?
That's a pretty broad question you've asked. Some on the forum have gone with the NEX 7, others have decided to go with the 5N and some have both. I suggest that you look at these two reviews and compare features and see what appeals to you:
the only thing I would add that is probably not addressed in the reviews is that if you're planning on using wide (35mm and wider) adapted rangefinder lenses on your camera, you'll have better corner performance and less detail smearing on the 5N than the 7. This does not appear to apply to you. Other than that, after you read the two reviews, let us know if you have specific questions.
The IQ on legacy wide angle lenses was the main reason I went with the 5N over the 7. The better low light performance and half the price sealed the deal.

If you're only planning on using legacy SLR lenses, rather than rangefinder lenses, then there are only a few potential advantages of the NEX-5N
- cost
- touchscreen
- add-on $350 EVF tilts and has on/off button, but adds bulk and cost
- size
- smaller file sizes save HDD space (minor one)
- auto ISO goes to 3200, rather than 1600
Just about everything else that I can think of is as good or better in the NEX-7, and it has more features like a built in level, triNavi controls, hotshoe, built-in EVF, 24mp, better grip, AF/MF button, etc.
I own the 5N, because I use rangefinder lenses, but, if I was you, I might consider the 7, despite giving up the above list of items.

Wouldn't the rangefinder lenses work on the NEX-7 too?
