p.1 #1 · houldnt NPS be offered to Professionals working in the film industry?

I dont have tear sheets or publications but Ive worked on many big hollywood movies with too many VFX shots.

I shoot on set photos, elements, bg plates and then composite them into feature films. As a compositor I do consider myself a professional and I do have a lot more Nikon gear then I should but I dont seem to meet their credentials for NPS.

Do you think they would consider me anyways if I send my IMDB page along lol?

Have you called and talked to them? If you meet all the requirements and explain your situation, I don't see why they wouldn't accept you.

Can't hurt to call and see, I know others have had the tear sheets waived, most portrait photographers wont have tear sheets.

So I submitted my info for consideration and i'll let you guys know what they say. i think it should be ok seeing as they changed the rules on the Global website recently..

Nikon Professional Services (NPS) is an organization designed solely to assist photographers who earn their living using Nikon equipment. This worldwide service is available to any qualified professionals in a wide variety of photographic disciplines, including movie productions shot with Nikon equipment. The three main goals of NPS are to keep NPS members shooting, to treat every member fairly and to understand each member as an individual with his or her own specific set of needs. The face-to-face relationship between members and staff is critical, because that's what enables NPS to deliver informed and personalized support in a quick and timely...Show more

I disagree even though I don't quality myself, since I don't make my primary living from photography, but would like to be an NFS member.

If they let anyone join, they would not be able to provide the kinds of personalized services they provide. This is a service designed for working professionals who risk huge dollars if anything goes wrong with their equipment on a shoot. It should be only for those working professionals, even if that excludes me (and you). It should not be something that you can simply buy into. If it were, then you'd have rich assholes who know nothing about photography, but buy a D4 to take bad pictures of their dog, demanding ridiculous services.

If Nikon wanted to also provide a separate paid service for those non-pros who have purchased a lot of equipment, that would be fine, but it should have nothing to do with NFS. I would definitely qualify for that, since I've been shooting Nikon since about 1970 and all of my current lenses are high-end. And I could also see how someone who has bought a D3 or D3x or is going to buy a D800 or D4 should expect a high level of service, considering the price of these bodies and the associated lenses.

A lot of people depend on cameras who aren't 'professionals'. Dentists, dermatologists, surgeons, and other medical professionals; engineers, legal forensics, etc. These people will pay $1000/yr or whatever for a membership. By charging for it you change it from a cost center to a profit center. It's how you make a business case to staff it up as a business unit, set its performance targets, and determine what its bonuses and other incentives should be. Without revenue you get a unit where nobody with any self-respect will want to work simply because there are no opportunities. Professional Services, in ANY capital-goods business, is a financial opportunity. Just ask IBM, Oracle, Canon, Sony, etc. They make a TON from hand-holding, guidance, training, on-location repair, consulting, certification, service programs, and whatnot. Only providing this, and then providing it for "free" (read: paid for by their other customers), at some ridiculously amateurish level, is really pretty pathetic. Talk about leaving money on the table.

But what do I care. I don't own stock in Nikon.

ROFL. When I was shooting full time I was an NPS member. The first time I had to renew after coming to B&H I was denied because my B&H salary was more than half my total income. My status as a B&H manager (then Director of Employee Training) meant nothing to them.

Read the first paragraph, NPS is open to more than just Photographers but also to people who use and rely on their photography equipment as a routine part of their jobs...
