p.1 #1 · D4 vs D800

I preordered the D4 from NPS and I am sure they will ask me if I want to preorder the D800.
I shoot a lot of on location advertising and don't think I really need 36mp but there are times when it would be nice. Can I shoot the D800 sized down for most of the times when I would prefer a HD friendly file size? I also shoot with a WT-4a wireless transmitter-does the D800 work with it like the D4 will? I am currently shooting with a D3/D700, does the D800 have at least as good low light capability as the D3?
Not sure I was happy Nikon put that new card slot in the D4, I know they say it's faster but I never had any issues with CF cards and I don't shoot video (not to say I won't experiment)

David,

Probably a little early to know the answers to your questions but Thom has a good read on it,
http://www.bythom.com/d800intro.htm

I shoot with the D3x/s and this makes a good fit for myself vs the D4.

the d4 has the new/ better wt 5 so that would probably make it worth it to you, i'm prety sure when looking at images the same size from a d800 and a d3/700 the pictures from the newer camera will look more pleasing.

i'm wondering if the d800 can match the d4 on colours and dynamic range?

Yes the WT 5 does look like an improvement and I will probably purchase at some point, but I might wait to recover a little after that initial 6000 so the Wt 4a will work in the beginning. Also the D4 has a silent mode - I will have to see if the D800 has a silent mode. I was also thinking about selling my D700 (which was my backup and has a lot less actuations than the D3) to help fund the D4 but now I wonder what will happen to the used prices of the D700?? Time will tell.

If you're shooting advertising, there are definitely going to be times when 36mp would be nice.

Nikon's official blurb is the D800 should have the same high iso quality as the D700/D3.

The top notch fashion/beauty work 85% of time requires use of at least 40MP or above MF. Will D800 be a game changer for that line of work?

I think so. It's definitely going to be stepping on some medium format toes that's for sure. Think about it... $3000 vs $OMG

If it's anywhere near the D700/D3 it's going to sell like hotcakes. Plain and simple.

People are complaining about the high MP but that's such a lame thing to complain about. As long as the noise is acceptable it's awesome.

Even if you really did need a new computer, you can pick up a cheapo PC (ugh I'm a mac guy) for like $1000. That's like half the price of a single decent lens.

My $0.02 anyway

I might have hazy eyes. To me, the eyes of the sample bride head shot doesn't look as sharp as what H4D-40 can capture in the similar lighting condition, let's at aperture 2.8. Sure, one needs to shoot both bodies side by side for serious comparison though.

Only in the D4-
Nikon has brought a number of the D4's feature tweaks and smaller feature additions to the D800, including things like automatic time lapse creation. It has also reserved a few goodies for the top-end model alone, including:
The delay interval for the D4's Exposure Delay Custom Setting can be set to 1s, 2s or 3s. In the D800, it's fixed at about 1s.
A full set of IPTC metadata can be embedded into D4 picture files as they're shot. This capability is not in the D800.
A setting in the D4 enables you to choose between having ambient exposure compensation applied to on-camera Speedlight output or to have ambient exposure compensation affect the ambient exposure only. This option doesn't exist in the D800.
While in Live View, the D4 can be configured to shoot up to 1920 x 1080 pixel JPEGs, at either 12fps or 24fps, without making a sound. This is also not to be found in the D800.

If the D4 is in DX format will it give it the extra reach like how the D800 does in DX?

D800 - " DX format offers approx. 1.5x, and 1.2x crop offers approx.1.2x telephoto effect." http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d800/features03.htm

"Both" would be the nice answer

Unfortunately, in my case it's "neither" at the moment
