I picked up a Bronica ETR from a former school photographer, she threw in 9 boxes of expired 120 and 220 film, expired in 2006. It's all portra 160 and 400 and has been in her freezer since purchase. I know Rockwell brags about using Velvia 10 years after its expired, but what should I expect?
It's probably quite fine. It will be a bit grainier than the new Portra 160 and 400 films, but since you are shooting medium format, that should be less of a problem. If you want to downplay the grain a bit, and overcome any potential fogging, it wouldn't hurt to overexpose the film a bit (100 and 250).
On the other hand, if the film was totally abused storage wise, it could be pretty bad, but that is unlikely.
I've used some fairly expired Portra 400 before and it had a pronounced green shift, but it hadn't been frozen nor even refrigerated. If they did indeed freeze the stock you're using, I wouldn't "sweat" it.
It's free film, go out and use it. If all else fails you can always make a black and white conversion out of the scan.
