Had a quick question about the Pocket wizard. I currently have a Canon 580exII a 580ex 1 and a 430exII. I know the Pocket wizards mount on top of my Canon Eos 1D MArk II. But I was wondering do you have to have slaves(or seperate Pocket Wizards,attached to the flashes?
I know B@H has them for $229 but I also have looked about the Canon ST-E2 transmitter. Does this work better or worse than the Pocket Wizard. I have also heard that the Pocket Wizards fry the Canon Flash 580exII. The Pocket wizard I was looking at was for ETTL flash units.

The camera needs a Mini or a Flex on it. Every remote flash needs a Flex on it. You can attatch a Mini or Flex to the camera and put a flash on Mini/Flex, but if you use an AC3 controller, which is really an almost necessary addition, you wont' be able to do that.
So, in a nutshell; one mini/flex for the camera, plus one flex for each flash. For 580ex's you will probably want the AC7 shell if the flash is more than 30-40ft from camera.
The Mini/Flex has more range then the st-e2. Mini/Flex is radio, st-e2 is light.The st-e2 has problems when there is a lot of sunlight outside. st-e2 usually requries clear line of sight from unit to flash, which may be an issue when the flash is inside a modifier.
Using a 580-ex as a controller is sometimes a better choice than an st-e2 because it has greater range than the st-e2 and is easier to aim.
Mini/Flex also gives you second curtain sync, if you care about that, the st-e2 does not.
So Mini/Flex like any radio controller will give you better range and doesn't have line of sight issues that a light based controller like the st-e2 has.

Personally, the PW Flex system was about as useful as pouring water on your camera. Although I like precise control over my strobes. I just saw a nifty little demonstration on RadioPoppers and I had to admit I was smitten.
