Just wondering if the 293 Manfrotto Telephoto lens support would work as a much cheaper alternative to the Kirk foot.
I KNOW THE KIRK IS WELL MADE AND WORTH EVERY PENNY, however I am really strapped right now (were talking raman noodles, maybe I should not even have a camera and lens kind of strapped), but I am hoping this could get me by until I can afford the kirk.
If there is an even cheaper alternative that would be ideal.

Get a quirk from a wine bottle and wedge it in between lens and the Nikon foot. I'm not kidding BTW. I've seen it done and it works well.
There's your answer -- it works remarkably well.
You'll still need some kind of foot if you want to use it on an Arca-style clamp, but you've got a ton of options there. Any basic rail will work, or you could get one with a lip at the back, which will be more secure because it will help avoid twisting.
