p.1 #1 · When is gear good enough?

Curious what the FM community has to say about this. I wrote an article about when I feel gear is good enough, but I know there will be different opinions. What do you think?

Most cameras (lenses too!) are better than most photographers.

I agree, gear is "good enough" when it exceeds your ability. or maybe slightly better to challenge your ability.

When you need wikipedia to explain "features" on the camera. Or as Ronny says.

p.1 #7 · When is gear good enough?

I think that these days there's a trend towards buying ever more sophisticated gear in the hope that it will improve the photographer. Arguments involving abuse and vitriol ensue on forums over whether this camera is better than that camera, or this lens is better than that lens, yet amazing images have been captured for years on film cameras with basic meters and manual focus lenses. Advancing technology makes images easier to capture, however technology does not a photographer make......

I think you hit the nail right on the head regarding what most people need. However, rarely do we purchase what we need. Your list to determine a photographers needs on paper, looks like a good model. Again most of us, I stress the word MOST, buy what we want, not what we need.

We buy cars we like, homes we like, visit places we like, associates with people we like, etc. Human nature buys a lot of product simply because we can, then we justify the purchase after it is made.

I am not suggesting that is good or bad, a little of both I suppose. The good effect is that it generally keeps things moving forward, the industry keeps growing, $ are pumped into the economies. Call it progress.

I would also suggest that the main reason for the shortened cycle time between new models is due to the computer. Our lives have changed more than most of us realize because of the computer. Our society tires quickly of old models of anything, there is this speculation about the latest and greatest coming out tomorrow, forgetting that today is a tomorrow and shouldn’t we just enjoy today a little more. Just look at the threads on FM speculating about the next release.

The computer has enabled all of us to so many new technologies, so much better than what we had in the past, and break through discoveries happen daily. We are driven looking for the next best, fastest, lightest, etc. This seems to speed up our lives to the extent we are always doing something, whether we should be or not.

How this all impacts us is yet to fully be understood. I miss the days of old, life was slower and I certainly took more time to see and smell the roses. It seems we lived more for the day; enjoyed more of the day, and just plain lived. Probably just me getting old and long in the tooth, but I think anyone older than 55 knows what I mean.

Digital was a big change for the industry, for the better for sure, I still print 90% of my own, have more money in my gear than what I paid for either of my first two houses, in 1974 I bought a new car and felt guilty that I had spent over $5000.00 on it and had to finance $1800 for 2 years, first time I took out a two year loan on a car.
Try that today.. Do I need the gear I have? Nope. Do I like the gear I have? Yup.

Most point and shoot cameras today are more than any hobbyist needs. A hobby has a path of evolving to better and better, or I want it, I buy it. I am guilty of this as well, hobby or profession.

We have long passed the point of buying to fill our needs, especially in this country. As other third world nations line up, I’m certain history will offer to them the same opportunity and they will follow the same path, we all want something better for our kids, right?

As for me, I miss the old days where there was time to do those things I enjoyed without having to look at my schedule, then slot it in and call it spontaneous.

Enough of my ramblings, I can’t wait to see the real specs/cost of the new Nikon D800. Is Feb. 7th still the release date?

Oh well, you see I really need this new body because……….

Cheers,
Gerard

It seems that many of us think the latest greatest camera is going to make us a better photographer. If this isn't true, why are so many obsessing over the latest rumoured cameras? The 1DX and 5DIII from Canon and the D800 from Nikon are examples - of the nine forums I belong to, all of them have at least one thread about one or more of these bodies.

Meanwhile, it was shown several years ago that a 4 MP sensor was equal to the resolution of a 35mm film camera (and the D800 is rumoured to be 36 MP).

Seems as though gear will ever good enough.

Nice article.
If I didn't care about cost ( of the camera and of the disk to store the files ), I wouldn't mind a 36mp D800 or something. You ask why would I want that ?
Easy, so I can shoot an Eagle with my 35mm prime lens and crop the heck out of it enough to get a good print out of it.
Don't need a telephoto lens, just a lot of pixels. :-))

When there will never ever be anything released that could be even remotely considered better, newer, or be anything that I don't already own.

Just buy a D7000 - you get the same effect as you would cropping the middle pixels out of a D800 for a third of the cost

Not me. I use a Rolleiflex, two Leica MPs and an M2 as my main cameras and have B&W film in them all. The Rolleiflex and M2 are 50+ years old and are still going great. No need to upgrade!

You are definitely not in the "many" category.

i am still limited by my equipment. i regularly push the limits of what i own and can't capture what i see because of limitations in the equipment. the most current announced bodies still fall a fair bit short. i make do. if there comes a day when i can't imagine anything interesting that exceeds what is possible with what's out there, it'll be time to quit photography.

When one realizes there is a difference in having a hobby of cameras and having a hobby of photography.

Just as a bunch of car guys enjoy talking shop, working on cars and trying to get more and more horsepower, many with camera hobbies want more and more lens, more resolution you name it.

Some people buying a 36meg camera make as much sense as the guy sitting in traffic with a 600hp sports car going no where fast.

There are of course those who make large prints, just as some maybe take their car to the drag strip and race it, which is all well and good, but plenty want more pixels or more horsepower "just because".

Its not that they "need" it, its merely part of this hobby, just like countless other hobbies be it golf, guitars, stereo speakers, you name it. Got to spend our money on something right ? lol

Never.

There will always be something better eventually.
