p.1 #1 · Bad day. Sandisk code needed - SOLVED - ingest is best?

Hi. Shocking day yesterday. Multiple equipment failures. Now a card failure too.

I have no idea where my sandisk codes have gone. I use zar if I have a problem but it's not working.

Can some kind soul please let me have a spare code?

Thanks

To save confusion, I am going to repost the whole story as the first post so that people can easily see what happened - its was more of a camera numbering error in the end but it was the way I was uploading images that made me think that stuff was missing:

_______________

OK, here is the latest.
The two suspect cards are showing as no data, except for a few shots that I took before I got suspicious of them. This suggests that the cards were not written to before hand because i always low level format my SD cards the night before. I didnt think I had written to the cards in question, I thought I had retired them once my suspicion was raised.

I looked at the file numbers and found a hole of ~1200 shots spanning about an hour and a half. Thats an unreasonable amount of shots to take in that time and what is missing is the entire of the ceremony ~100 - 200 shots max. However I found those files on another card but the file names were the same as existing files. Initially didn't copy the data off them as I had assumed that they were just the backups (from 1 series cameras).

So I have now got my ceremony shots back (at least mostly) I think. I cant tell exactly because the power has just failed.

MORAL:
Use the ingest feature in Photo mechanic or Lightroom, relying on your good knowledge of the OS isnt much help if all you are going by is file name. If you use a camera that writes backups and you have a numbering error it is easier to get tricked as I just did. Having a system that ingests all data from card is probably safer.

As for whats caused the error, I dont know yet. The power has gone. Its blowing a huuuge storm outside and I found a massive spider trying to break into my car whilst I was driving this morning. I have had quite enough adrenalin for one morning. Im going to make a cup of tea, oh .... hang on, some toast then, no....hmmmm

Thank you so much to all those who have sent me codes. I will add more to this when I know whats happened, trying to think back to what it was that concerned me about those cards....

UPDATE:
Powers back. All images seem to be there, at least in terms of coverage of all events.

___________________________

I don't really need evidence, suspicion is enough. Suspect cards were not used.

The point behind this post is not so much about card error but much more to do with the way cards are imported into the computer. I had a camera numbering error but because I was not using the best method to get the images onto the computer, it was looking like a card error.

I never used to take the 'Ingestion' method seriously, now I see it's benefits.

Ugh. Lost 580 in big park, turned up in back of car, when i got home, someone put in wrong bag..

The 1d3 was telling me fec was set when it wasn't and then other 580 was refusing to work correctly without an fec dialled in. Way too many people in venue, couldn't move. Video led panel burning my eyes out and spent 2 hours outside with it being 32 in the share. Sun had teeth.

Lost red cover off ste-2 and 580, found that one later on dance floor cover cracked. Then found that he 580 af assist lamp had stopped working, I think the flash took a hit and caused the cover to come off. There was a point where I had to leave reception for a moment, I'm wondering if someone tried to move bag and tipped some gear out by accident. That would account for the flash but the other stuff is kinda subtle, I'm wondering of it could be humidity?

Anyway more on the cards when I get it figured out. I'm sure there is a lesson somewhere.

Thanks.

good it worked out. sometimes we need a reminder that two cams and lots of backup is not luxury, but a must.

Agree. Suspect cards should not be used on important jobs. Some eBay cards are bogus.

At the risk of sounding terse, could we please keep this on topic, as I feel it's quite animportant subject, with value to others. This is actually has little to do with card errors allthough I do agree, mediocre cards should not be trusted.

Currently I have no evidence that there was any card error. Only a camera numbering error. I was suspicious of one of two cards that I had just recently bought so I took them both out of circulation straight away.

I don't really need evidence, suspicion is enough. So no, suspect cards were not used on an important job.

The point behind this post is not so much about card error but much more to do with the way cards are imported into the computer. I had a camera numbering error but because I was not using the best method to get the images onto the computer, it was looking like a card error.

Actually... I find 'ingestion' methods to be just as problematic because you are relying on the computer to read and sort the cards and its easy to be lulled into a hands off attitude.

The best method IMO, is simply opening the cards and copying the data, and being aware of the file numbers coming in and what you've already got downloaded.

I have used ingestion method since the beginning, first with adobe bridge now with photo mechanic. There was a very short period of time when I was using when I use canon browser and windows copy and paste...something happened with the software or card reader (wasn't recognising the fact the card was in the card reader) but somehow I missed a bunch of files and I broke out in a cold sweat until I found them. One of my cameras that day was hired which put them in a separate folder on the disc!! Which canon browser didn't see!!! I ended up going to Photomechanic's ingest and haven't had an issue since. However I still go mad checking and rechecking the files when I ingest a wedding anyway.
