Have there been shots showing the Contax G 90 isn't good at infinity?

lets hope we see some impressive long infinity shots; nex + g90 here.

I have not yet seen a g90 shot on the level of Andrew's zm85 + m43 above; but I'd prefer details at a bit more distance to judge landscape performance.

what do they say....smoke 'em if ya got em?

Yes, even though it was my least used lens on the G system I never thought it was anything but great.

Since the Summarit M75/2.5 is kind of new to me it is a bit premature to come to a final verdict. But, it seems the Summarit line is more Zeissy than the rest of the Leica M's.

From what little I have seen so far, the Summarit 75/2.5 is sharper than the G90 wide open, both close up and far, has a little less CA and has better foreground bokeh. The Summarit has some of that Zeissy pop to it

for me at least the 75 summarit is a much better focal length on aps-c, i'll have to look into it a bit.

If you find good Jupiter-9 85mm f2(zeiss sonnar copy) for m39 or kiev/contax mount will be great lens, sharp from f2 and stunning from f4, performance is very similar to 85/1.4 Planar when stopped down. Weight 330g so it`s excellent for Nex. I bought few of them recently and there is big difference between m42 and rangefinder version. RF are much sharper wide open Bokeh is smooth, some small CA wide open and price is very low(i bought mine from 50 to 60$) Will post some pics shortly.

Andrew; you have the Zeiss ZM 85/2? I am very seldom jealous, but I'd love to have tried that lens.

Ed here on the forum has the ZM 85/4. He might have some samples in the RF (film) thread.

uhoh7: I am not sure if I can dig up any infinity shots from the G90, but I think I have some scanned from my trip to Utah back in the days. Shot with the G2 on film though. I kept a G90 for quite a while, thinking I would convert it. But, after using the M75/2.5 I found that the Leica lens is practically as good as the G90 in every aspect, and even better in some. Also, it is nice to use the lens sans adapter on the GXR M, the focusing ring runs very smooth on my copy so the overall shooting pleasure is right up my alley.

Bill, the G90 seems pretty amazing to me. I don't get excited about landscape until Spring breaks, so this is a pretty casual snap (unprocessed, way too blue!). I shot a set of this ridgeline to make a pano, here's one of the uncropped photos...

http://www.redwrench.com/2012/CG/20120124-_DSC1046.jpg

When I got home and looked at 100%, it amazed me. The lowest ridge in the foreground is a ski area 15-17 miles north of me, and you can pick out individual ponderosa trees there. The highest peaks where you can still see many of individual trees is 25 miles away!

http://www.redwrench.com/2012/CG/20120124-_DSC1046c.jpg

I can only imagine what this lens is capable of under careful work conditions.

Cheers,
Michelle

Like many film lenses, I don't doubt the g90 can be great. Performance on the nex sensor is another matter

here's another TE 90, with better atmosphere.

when I see a g90 as sharp at such range on a nex I think i'll buy one.

Obviously, you can't really compare unless you have the lens yourself, Charlie. Go for it!

haha, my big binge is over now I think.

but another issue is infinity focus on the nex--for M and LTM with the hawks it's easy, as the stop is very close.

But lenses which go well past infinity are a pain for me---are there any contax adapters with close infinity calibration--or is this impossible?

The real draw for me is the 45, which I know for sure is fantastic.

Nah, all the G lenses focus past infinity, and I think the 90 may even focus past infinity the most. I'd imagine some may have a hard time nailing infinity focus with that lens, so comparison tests could be iffy. I don't use that focal length a ton, so the adapter doesn't bother me, but I've moved away from the G lens in my more commonly used focal length.

p.s. I just got my Hawks version II, and it seems that it is a little thinner than my version I, and it also has better spring clips and a focus tab. I'll have to start a thread about it some time.

I'm going to bet we're seeing the best out of the G90 now than ever before (given digital's performance vs. film). The projection plane is pretty far away from the sensor (given the focal length) so I don't think this is a lens that gets "hurt" on digital.

Here's medium/far distance (probably 150-200 yards?) F5.6 or maybe 8

Looks pretty stunning to me. Nothing too crazy on processing.

@ dan: you should confirm whar sensor you are showing--asumming it's some version of the nex--100 yards just does not show landscape performance. When you have a chance throw up some longer captures and links to full size or crops.

TY, sir

Wille; you've got the G90, you could show us what it is capable of. Take a shot from the Slussen/Katarinahissen of the Aalandsbaaten at dock, in Aaland. That should be far away enough.

charlie, i'm afraid it'll be difficult for anybody to match what you can do at infinity with a telephoto independent of what lens they use. atmospheric haze plays such a huge role at these distances, being at high altitude away from major cities is a huge advantage.

Henrik, you are in an unusual illustrious mode this evening

Even the excellent Contax G90 will have hard times overriding the curvature nature of earth given the distance to Åland.

Willy: I am just exhausted. Today I ran past most of your scenic vistas today, on a 22,68km run around Stockholm waterfronts. I am only running one day a week nowadays and I haven't been running that kind of distance in decades, literally. But I'm stubborn. It was -14C when we head out (-19,7C in the morning when we got up) but we endured.

So, I will be limping to work (a few blocks from your work actually) next week.

Thanks for the lesson, I guess a shot at what's visible within earths curvature is called for then.

Here's another CV 90 and crop from the D700 this time. It was tripod mounted on timed release. There was a lot of atmospheric haze, so I did have to punch up contrast in Nik, with there default level sharpening.

The other lens sample images posted in this thread look like great options as well, with better performance than the CV. I do like it for what it is, a small tele that I can use natively on my Nikon rig and isn't too big on a small mirrorless either. I wonder how it looks on a 5DII though, or the soon to be announced D800 sans AA filter.

+1. I can shoot all of the mountain ranges and buildings from my backyard that I want... but I'm in Los Angeles, so you can imagine how smoggy atmosphere will play a part! I tried sending Derek some raws of my ZM 50/1.5 at distance stopped down, but, between the haze and my adapter possibly not reaching infinity, I basically wasted his time.
