Just having a browse of the Canon Rumours website and it looks like Canon may be sticking with a winning formula, as far as MP's go and then tweaking the other bits that let the 5d mk2 down.
If this is true it could mean that the D800 will fall in line with this MP philosophy and wont turn out to be the 36mp beast we are expecting, or once again they will be completely different just like the D700 and 5d mk2 are.
I wonder how many Nikonians would jump ship if this turns out to be the case??

Hmm. I just tossed my D3s into the garbage.
Lol. But you have to admit that a 22mp camera with 61pt AF and 6.9 fps will appeal to a boat load of Nikonians. Whilst there are many people who have welcomed the rumoured 36mp of the D800 I have easily heard more people complain that it is far too many MP's and they would have preferred 21 - 24mp. I reckon there will be many Nikonians eyeing up the 5Dx right now.
Without anything more than speculation... one could imagine that a 22mp body with great AF and good fps could be a better balance of specs. However, I would expect it would take more than just a jump to 36mp to cause Nikon users to dump their whole system and switch to Canon. The D800 would have to have some major shortcoming to promt a switch IMO. Now, someone that has recently switched to Nikon and hasn't fully settled into their new system... sure I could see a decent chance of them swapping back.
i could care less about 61pt AF...i just want one....and i want one that works.....the 5D2's center point is less than great.......the d2x had 11 points with a realllly good center point...same with the d200....

If there are, then there'll be a hell of a lot of cheap lenses up on here. Can't wait.
I figure ONE switch per lifetime is enough for me. I'm comfortably settled in the Nikon camp after a few years with Canon. Whether there is a D800 in my future is yet to be determined but there is no doubt of my love for the D700. I honestly don't care at all what Canon does from here on out. I wish Canon shooters well. Nikon has everything that I want or need.

Ha, yeah sure. Can't wait for a the 5DX announcement with an expected delivery date of 7-8 months.

I fell for the Canon Hype when I dumped my D90 to get a 5D2
Within two weeks I was so sorry, then the D7000 came out with just about better everything.
So I dumped that non AFn thing and will never go back.
My guess is that the D800 will trounce the 5D3 so badly that they may not even bother to bring it to market.

Maybe. But I don't think it will appeal to a whole lot of Nikon owners for the simple fact that many former owners of 5D classic and MK II made the switch to the Nikon D700 that has 12 MP and better higher ISO noise. A higher MP comes with a tradeoff of having noisier images at high ISO.
I went from the Canon 5D classic to the D700 after being frustrated with Canon's poor AF in low light. Then from the D700, I recently upgraded to the D3s in the pursuit of better ISO performance.
It'll be interesting to see if Canon really does offer 61 AF points for the Canon 5Dx. But I have a hunch that they will offer 45 AF points or less.

< sigh > You COULD care less? How much less?
60pts less in fact :-).... I should have been more specific in my previous post... When i said "i just want one" i meant one af point, not the new body from canon... I'm a center point guy... Actually, 11 or 9 AWESOME af points would be great...61 is excessive... 51 or whatever in the 300/700/d3 is pretty excessive too i think... For me anyway...
If the 5dx stays with 22mpix...I won't even look at it. I already have the 5d2 and am looking for a higher Rez camera for landscapes. I don't need a 7fps camera...already have the 7d.
Bring on the mpix or go home. If Canon decides to keep the mpix low, the d800 just might make a home in my camera bag.

Who said anything about arguing. This is a forum, a place for discussing things of interest.
I think it is a shame that people instinctively look at things with such a negative view and are so quick to criticise or play down other peoples threads, posts, thoughts and opinions. Such a large percentage of threads on here very quickly spiral into dispute and for what reason?
FM is certainly one of the better forums that's for sure but there is so much needless negativity.
Anyway, back ON TOPIC. It's horses for courses I suppose. I do believe that if the 5dx turns out as the rumours suggest (ooh man I love discussing vapourware and things that don't exist because of course they never will, right?) there will be a lot of people (I have seen many many of them on here) who do not want the huge mp of the D800 and will be tempted to either switch or buy the Canon and build a second system. Of course this does indeed depend on how much they have already invested in Nikon, their income, their lifestyle, their shooting needs etc etc. our individual circumstances and buying drivers are all different.
