I don't see this as a D700 replacement because of the high pixel count must mean more noise. I can't imagine a Sony sensor beating the D700's noise.

I don't think McNally will have tested out the D800, though I'd be interested to see what he'd do with it.
I am glad the D800 is finally coming out and really hope the D400 rumors start up soon.
I love my D7000 but I need the freaking bigger buffer and I want the machine gun FPS.
I am hoping the D3200 rumors prove true because that could mean Nikon will use that rumored 24MP DX sensor on that and leave the D400 with a sexy improved 16 or 18 MP sensor... unless they make it the true D700 replacement then I'll have to jump to FX.

I love my D7000 also.1) wish the buffer was better. 2) Quicker on auto focus
3) had 1 stop better ISO.Love the resolution on it though..I shoot 90% wild life and Dx works for me...so far Doug
I must say at first I was not tempted but looking at the specs, my only problem with the D7000 is it's stupid limited buffer. Also I kind of hate the auto modes because sometimes I accidentally switch to them when I have it hanging from my side and something about sounding like a machine gun really appeals to me.
I really don't want to jump to FX because I like my reach but if the D400 is not a flagship DX or a true D700 replacement I'll be looking hard at the D800 because 6FPS with that giant buffer might fit my needs.

I see 4 FPS in FX and 6 FPS in DX I hope this is with out an asterix. The D3x can only reach 5 FPS in 12 bit. I was hoping for 6 FPS in FX with optional grip.
Comparing with my D7000 and lenses, the D800 looks to be almost the same size + bigger prism hump. If there's a way to confirm the grip's the MB-D11, then we'd know for definite (we will in a few hours anyway). The size thing makes me happy, but it also makes me think there may be another small FX body at some point as I am also aware that I'm in a minority in wanting a smaller body.
With good cards the D7000 buffer is nigh indistinguishable from a D300, and in some ways better. You really should have the 45/95 MB/s cards by now if you use continuous release a lot.
