p.1 #1 · Candids by Campfire

These were taken at the end of our first night in the George Washington National Forest in mid-January.

Perfectly fine to critique

Did you shoot in RAW. WB looks to warm in the first one and try bringing the exposure down a bunch also. I think you have lost his face but maybe not.

keep posting

Yeah I did shoot RAW. To be honest I don't think I've ever messed with the white balance of any shot I've taken before, I always leave it on "As Shot" in ACR and my camera is set to 5600k. I'll try fiddling with it and see what I can do

I agree on the comment about exposure, but I think the white balance is Ok for the subject matter. It would look unnatural if a campfire produced a neutral light. Could probably go a little cooler if you wanted to, but that's really to taste. Looks fine to me.... having spent a lot of time around campfires.

Agree. Reduce exposure - that should help.

really you leave your white balance at 5600? Wow. Why not try auto whitebalance and adjust in acr, if needed.

To be honest, if it wasn't for the option of changing whitebalance from a RAW photo I would probably shoot jpeg most of the time.

would be nice to see the new version with the exposure and wb tweeked a bit.

Thannks for sharing

Thanks for the feedback thus far. I don't know why I didn't notice that those reds were killing the shot. I converted it to black and white and played with it then converted back and I could feel my eyes melting when I saw the reds and yellows. I tried to tone the fire down a little bit and ease off the reds, but it doesn't look like I can get much more detail from the face, too much of the whites are blown out.
