p.1 #1 · Transporting light stands by air

What is the best way to transport light stands while flying? I know it wouldn't fit in a suitcase. Anyone do this for out of state weddings?

Unless you bought wrought-iron stands, the stands you own should have some sort of twisting mechanism that will magically allow you to close the feet up and then telescope the rod down to a size that (surprise!) can fit in some suitcases/bags.

P.S. People fly with Skis all the time (well in winter anyway) ... lightstands got nothing on skis

haha Alex! So that's what those nobs are for!! Actually I was looking to carry 3 light stands but wasn't sure if I should get a hard case for them. They're the Paul C Buff stands and even closed, they stand 3ft tall.

Most light stands can take a beating. I've got a light-weight nylon lightstand bag that works fine. I guess a padded one would be better, but it doesn't really matter.

Thanks everyone, Brett, that was my main concern. But looks like what I have will work just fine for now.

If you do this regularly I suggest a hard side golf club case. I can fit a bunch of stands, even turtle base c stands and extension cords, umbrellas and chimera light boxes in mine. It has wheels and it's about half the cost of one made photo photograph. new it was 120 and they are on craiglist allmthe time for 20 or 30 $.

Nano stands. They're like 16 in closed.
They fit in carry on luggage.

I have a bag similar to this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/556222-REG/Photoflex_TP_GIGBAG_TP_GIGBAG_Gig_Transport_Bag.html

It has been on many many flights and it still looks new. I bring c-stands on flights, they will not break.

Oh that's perfect. I just wasn't sure if they'd get banged up too much to a point where I'd have to fight with the stands, esp when Im no where near home.

I need to carry heavy duty stands for my purpose. Nanos are not an option.

The bag I have isn't even padded...but I usually use that as my clothes bag as well, just stuff what I need in there as padding and stuff. You can always buy big heavy duty cardboard tubes to fill it for extra protection.

The c-stands I use have the removable turtle-base and they fit nice and snug.

Hey that's a great idea about carboard tubes! The stands I have, come to think of it, I think I can take it apart completely like you just mentioned. That would even let me carry it in a suitcase solving all the problems without having to spend any money.

I have one of these

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/655985-REG/Manfrotto_MBAG100PN_MBAG100PN_Padded_Tripod_Bag.html

(pretty sure mine is a 39" but ill have to measure)

Got it from a friend and was able to carry two light stands, two 32" umbrellas, all my speedlight brackets, and my tripod. It was tight but worked out perfect.

Weighed 24lbs and I checked it without any issues.

**EDIT** I measured the bag today and it's the 34" version.

Would it be convenient to post/courier them to location ahead of schedule? Is that reasonable/possible?

@louloulou, dont you still have a spare chopper? I remember you used it when you brought back that magazine I lent you. Something weird about the rotor radius meant we had to be careful as it was just slightly too big for the main landing pads at the back. The kids and I had to get some rifles and clear all the 'roos and drop-bears from 'pad #3. I still have have that bullet lodged in my arm.

Unfortunately, with our kids just growing bigger, we had to trade the chopper in for this

I'm still sad about the 'roos. Collateral damage is a b!tch.

Hope that bullet doesn't give you too much trouble atm moment? Shrapnel tends to hurt more in cold weather, so I've found...
