A world-class location in the middle of San Francisco Bay- yet the residents seldom even saw the spectacular views.
But then, the residents were there for serious reasons.
I think it's a great place to shoot. There are many little areas that you can just get some really nice detail shots and juxtapose the stark prison with the city skyline across the bay.
I want to like these, but there is just something about them that isn't doing it for me.

Hmmm- could the inmates see those nice views? I don't recall that, but maybe so.
Processing was extremely contrasty and rough-textured- maybe that's part of what "isn't doing it" for you. Understandable. I wasn't going for wall-hanging quality. Rather, I was trying to interpret my feelings toward the terrible place and the even more terrible things many of the men did that got them sent there. It was a very personal interpretation. No doubt others might interpret Alcatraz differently.
Vive la difference.
