Coming from a Canon system I am considering a switch to a NEX-7.
An important feature for me is a wireless flash setup.
Since the Sony system would be new for me I could build the flash accessories up from scratch.
This is an opportunity to do it right, and that's why I'm asking for advise.
I think I want four portable flashes. One should be Sony. The others could be a different brand.
Has anybody experience with either Sony's own flashes or Phottix Strato II units, with any kind of flash? Or other good but not too expensive comparable portable solutions?
I assume the Sony flashes are optically triggered, same as Canon? Is that good? Does ETTL2 (or how they call it) work?
And what flashes go nicely with the Phottix Strato II units? Is that fully manual then?
The Nex-7 has the Alpha hot shoe. Is there a solution to use the same flashes together with other Nexes (3,5,5N)?
If you are firing flashes off camera, then you just need to make sure your trigger is working with NEX-7. If it does, there is no point to replace your flashes.
Unless you are burning with desire to donate a random sum of money to SONY..
Krosavcheg, this reply to my questions is of so little use to me that I am surprised that one writes it at all.
Well, to tell you my opinion: there is also no point in keeping four Canon Speedlites at a time when I don't own a Canon any more.
I thought one Sony flash plus maybe three good flashes of any other brand would likely be cheaper...
As for the trigger: which one works with Sony and third party flashes in auto-mode? Or do they work only manual?
Ken, I cannot open the link but I'll try again, thank you!
The NEX-7 is the only NEX with Wireless TTL support. However the built-in flash cannot command (which is an oddity in the Alpha system). You'll probably want an FVL-20 as a commander flash and then some Metz or Sony flashes as slaves (avoid any other brands, especially Sigma, they don't play well).
The biggest caveat is which flashes to go with, the older flashes (the FVL-56 and FVL36, their Minolta twins the 5600HS(D) and 3600HS(D)) don't support multi-group flash on digital bodies. I'd go for the FVL-43's for cheap slaves or a mix of them and at least one FVL-58.
Note Krosvacheg is correct if you don't need TTL capability. No point in selling off 4 working flashes to replace with off-brand flashes that are inferior to your Canon speedlights anyways. In that case I'd sell one of your Canons to help fund some triggers and get a FVL-20 for on-camera fill.
