p.1 #1 · 70-200 f/2.8 L II & 2.0EX III for Soccer?

My son is playing U12 soccer, and the longest lens I own is the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS. I’m considering getting the 2.0X III. Do any of you have any experience with this combo for youth soccer in daylight? Some sample pictures would be great! My goal is to be able to take some good shots for my personal use without having to spend a boatload of money on a longer lens. Any advice is much appreciated!

Tim

I've not used the 2.0 III, but have used the 1.4x III on my 5d2. I have the 2.0 II and have tried that too. It can be accurate, but is very slow for an already somewhat slow body (compared to my 1d4) and I miss too many shots with it. You have lots of resolution with the 5d2, so I'd suggest the 1.4x for faster focus and just wait for the action to come to you and crop a bit. The 70-200 2.8 IS II takes the 1.4x III really well. I've thought about getting the 2.0 III, but have not done it. Just not sure how much I'd actually use it. I'll be curious to see if any other use it with that combo (5d2 and 70-200) and what their results were.

Tim I shoot youth soccer U8-U12 and use a 300 f2.8. If your using a 5d MK II 300mm should be give you plenty of reach plus you have pixels to crop. I would slap the 1.4 tele converter on it and give it a try. The 2x tele converter will not yield as good results and you wil have to bump up ISO to get an acceptable shutter speed if the light is not good.

Here are a couple links to what a FF body and 300mm lens can do. I shoot from the end line and the 300 plus cropping can cover beyond midfield,

I have never shot with 5D, but I did shoot with a 10D many years ago. I used both the 100--400 and 70-200 2.8 IS (first edition) with both a 1.4 or 2x. Now, the 10D was slow as heck, compared to what is out now a days, but that is all I had. Without the converters, the lens focused fast. Adding the converters, there was a bit of difference in the focus factor. Even now with my 400, I notice a bit of difference with 2x converter. Not much with 1.4 converter. As for sharpness, there is a bit of difference. The converter made my shots a bit soft with the 70-200. With out the 2x converter, sharp and crisp. To me, I saw the difference. To the company I was working for, they saw the difference. Parents, all they saw was little Johnny or Suzie in a very clear action shot. They purchased many pictures, be it with or without the converters. Even the parents that had Digital Rebels with generic lense, saw the difference in our shots versus theres and they would by too. Even with the 2x converter, you may need to move up and down a bit so as when you crop, you don't crop heavy. I would have to go thru a boat load of pictures to find my samples, but as a parent (wife too) we like the results of 70-200 with and without the converters. My point is, NO WAY is the 5D2 slower than the 10D, I think

Thank you all for the helpful info! Bruce, thanks for the pics. Great examples! I've thought about the 1.4x as well. I've used it before (not for soccer), so I know that it performs very well. I've never used the 2x, but I got curious because this past weekend, I borrowed my friend's 100-400L, and I liked the reach when I was shooting from one end line. I shoot my son's games for fun, so I really don't want to get a longer lens, at least not now Maybe I'll try to rent/borrow one of the extenders to give it a try.

Tim, just sent you a reply to your PM. Ah, the FAMOUS 100-400 is very nice. Loved it when I had it and it made me some bit of change with it. I thought about getting another one, but was able to get some $$$ and buy my BEAST and pass on the 100-400. Fixed zoom takes time to learn and adjust. I used it this past Sunday and I kept catching myself wanting to zoom in, then realized I could not. Good luck on what ever choices you make

Hey Tim how did your 5D MK II do with tracking. I'm curious because my wife wants a new camera and the 5d is on her list.

Tim,
I'll put in my 2cents.
First, I don't think you will be happy with 300mm for soccer, even if you had a crop camera.

I had the same delemma, but just didn't want to buy the older design of the 100-400. If it were released soon as many hope, I would recommend it. This past fall I picked up the 2x iii to go with the 70-200 MK ii on my 7D. Follow this link, I think most of these except the boys were with the combo. I have found the focus speed and tracking quite decent.

Bruce, the tracking seemed fine. I know the 5DmkII is not your ideal sports body, but it seemed to do a good job.

Guy, thanks for your input! I'm glad to see someone who's had good results with the combo! I appreciate the samples.

I had a similar experience to morenoar (Hi Angel!) in that the extender affected the AF speed and accuracy on my 20D in a negative way. In the end, I decided it wasn't worth the tradeoff as my keeper rate suffered in spite of having the ebility to shoot goal line to goal line. I have shot many, many HS soccer matches with just the 70-200 (around 150,000 images) and usually come away with upwards of 1,000 images to choose from in a single match. I eventually did acquire a 400 f/5.6L and used it occasionally, but the 70-200 f/2.8L is the cornerstone of my soccer shooting kit.

If I were shooting a 1D Mkx, I would not likely be content to shoot HS soccer with a 70-200 f/2.8L, but the 1.6x crop factor on the xxD series bodies has worked out fine for me.

Depending on where the sun is coming from, I usually shoot from the touchline, about 30 yards up from the goal line, or behind the goal line with the sun behind me and the cleanest BG I can manage and let the action come to me. The times I have tried chasing the action, I spend more time chasing, and less time capturing.

The thing is that the (single) absolutely perfect youth soccer lens doesn't really exist. So, unless you're going to shoot with two rigs, you are stuck with living and dieing with what you get from whatever you choose.

The 100-400L is a great range, but I love me my f/2.8 aperture (YMMV). The Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 has a pretty satisfactory range, but it weighs upwards of 7lbs (IIRC) and costs over $2K. Though, if it was more in the price range of my beloved 70-200 f/2.8L, I would admittedly be tempted.

The xxD series biggest drawback as a sports rig is the 9 point AF system. Compared to something like a 1DMkIII (with something like 45 AF points), it isn't as accurate so keeper isn't what it could be. I usually just set to centerpoint only to take advantage of the high precision (when used with an f/2.8 lens) center point sensor and live with it knowing which focus point will be used.

Bottom line is that a 1.6x crop factor body with a 70-200 f/2.8L is plenty capable of getting you more than what you need and no single lens is the perfect all encompassing solution IMHO.

Tim....before I go my 300 2.8, I used my 70-200 2.8 and 1.4X II on my Mark 2n pretty exclusively on all of the outside sports I shot....to include AAA baseball. All with very good results. Once the sun went down....the quality dropped off a lot.

1.4 is great, the 2, not so much. I've shot everything from a D3s+400 2.8 all the way to a 40D with a 70-200 f4.

Realistically, you're only going to get shots in the box and just outside of it, even with a teleconverter (you might get some shots down the wing as well). It's not enough to get play in the midfield.

I've considered buying a 7D several times just to shoot sports with, the tracking on the 5Dii is terrible, but workable. Plus the crop factor evens the playing field.

Regardless of what you choose, the 70-200 combination with a teleconverter is not going to be comparable to a 300 or 400 prime. There's something there about the image quality that you won't see in a zoom+converter.

Hey Matt! Great to hear from you. I need to hang out in the sports corner more often! Man, it'd be awesome to try on your 400...although you'd probably never it see it again!

Thanks again for everyone's input! The vast majority of my shooting is for clients (families, events), so my gear reflects that. When my kids' were younger, I could get by with my gear on a smaller soccer field, but now I'm definitely experiencing the limitations!

Tim we all have a little Lens Envy when it comes to the big primes.
