p.1 #1 · SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 50mm T0,95

Steve Huff published a preview of the new SLR-Magic Hyperprime 50mm/0.95, i think it might interest some users here.
This lens is not related to the mediocre Noktor 50/0.95 and Steve Huff seems to like it a lot.

Part 1 World Exclusive 1st Look! SLR Magic HyperPrime LM 50mm T0.95 – For Leica M Mount

Part 2 Bokeh and Sharpness with the SLR magic LM 50 T0.95 on the Leica M9-P

Part 3 SLR Magic REALLY IS Magical…the LM 50 T0.95 ROCKS

Thanks Phill!

A fun and taunting read! I do hope it comes in at a lot cheaper that he and everyone he's talked to guesses! The nFD 85/1.2 hits at around $750 ~ $900 and that would be a payable price for most of us. They really really need to consider scaling up production tho and pump out the unit in quantities.

I looked at all of the samples in their full pop-out resolution and I like most things about it. The Bokeh at f/1.4 looks pretty close to Voigtlander's Nokton design to me... Meaning it's one you either love or hate. It had to grow on me for sure.

If it's right around the $1k mark I'm getting one! If it's closer to or over $2k I'll never see one. At $3k and over there are just too many other more desirable purchases for me and I guess most others. If it's like that I guess they'll have priced themselves right out of the market. Or not... who knows...

Anyway, thanks again man! At only 41 posts you already ROCK!!! dood!

It was a good read, but I feel compelled to ask:is there any gear Steve Huff DOESN'T like?

Sure doesn't seem like it.

Correction: He doesn't 'like' stuff, he 'loves' it.

yeah, he's a pretty charismatic evangelist... But we knew that going in... Just look at the images tho! They mostly speak for themselves.

As a poor student i will have to stick to my good old minolta lenses, but i hope SLR-Magic will become a player in the new-manual-lenses-for-viewfinder-cameras-market and produce something like a compact samyang 35/1.4 or affordable wide-angle lenses for my nex.

Thanks for sharing, Phillip. It will be very interesting to see the street price, but I'm pretty sure it'll be more than I ever want to spend on a 50.

Wow, amazing rendering!

That seems like an interesting lens, but I wouldn't expect it to be cheap... I mean like 1500$ cheap.

I always l like to see the so called lens test where people shoot their backyard or a tree. Nothing that a photographer would shoot or can compare to everyday life....

It does look tempting, but I can't see them sell it for less than $1500,
There is a lot of work to make a fast lens that doesn't have CA through the roof,
I want a compact 12mm lens for my NEX, maybe Sony will come up with something.

If the lens turns out to be as as good as the review implies, then it would be interesting.

Having read the article, it sounds like the author gets paid by DSLR magic to test and consult on the lens performance so I would not open my wallet until I see other reviews.

I don't really care how optimistic Steve is, the rendering, smoothness, and clarity of this says it all to me:

The Huffster has stated previously on his site that if he tests equipment he doesn't like, he usually won't post a review or give an opinion about it, hence the majority of highly positive reviews.

The questions I have about the lens are whether they'll be able to maintain the same level of quality in a production environment, day in, day out and who will service the lens if it needs to be matched to a digital M? Having chatted with Leica Store staff a couple times, they've stated that most Nocti purchases have to be sent in with a camera for pairing. Will the HyperPrime be any different? By the sounds of it, the lens worked well for Huff and his group, but I doubt all of them will be perfect matches out of the box. An honest question - who out there (in the US, or Canada) can do this kind of calibration, other than Leica?

As for the price. Even if they could sell it at $1500 and make a decent profit, it would be insane to sell it so inexpensively when the only other comparable lens, which this one appears to closely match, is $11,000. Of course they don't have the Leica brand to fall back on, but as all the excitement at Huff's site shows, There should be plenty of rangefinder shooters willing to spend around $4000.

Hm, he says :

I have to say that you can buy another 50mm lens that will perform better in almost every way for an extra $300 or so. I am talking about the Voigtlander 50 Nokton 1.1. It is a sharper lens, has better color, better contrast and is almost as fast with a 1.1 aperture.

If the Voigt is to be had for an extra $300, than this one should be below $1k ? Than it would be interesting as a second / low light 50 - for "certain applications".

Thats a quote from the Noktor 50/0.95 review, which is a relabeled cctv-lens and is not in any way related to the SLR-magic Hyperprime 50/0.95.

You are right , lost the track of the pages...

Don't know about others, but I will not get it if it goes past $1.5k. Not a lens I would need that often to justify the expense.
