p.1 #1 · Nikon 85mm f/1.8 and f/2 MF lenses

I'm curious if anyone has any experience with either the 85mm f/1.8 (H, HC and K) or 85mm f/2 lenses (ai and ai-s).

There are plenty of samples on Flickr and plenty of opinions out there, but I was hoping to see what people on this board who have experience with any of the above lenses had to say.

I used the 85 F2 Ais for many years with a pair of F3's. Portraits in the studio, weddings, general people pics outdoors were all good. The lens was nice for me and I liked it. You have to own them to know them, however. Consider sample variations and what you shoot. The 85 F1.8 AFD is the same game to me. You can use a reducing filter to make it 52mm. I always use a lens shade for best results. I have a 105 F2.5 Ais and I would consider that lens instead of the 85 F2 Ais.

I've always considered the 85/2 AIS and the 105/2.5 AIS to be of similar quality, which should be considered high praise for the cheap 85. It's also very similar to the Contax 85/2.8 when shot at equal apertures - also a very high mark in my book.

The older 85/1.8 versions I haven't used, and they've never interested me very much. The results I've seen from them show some serious problems with LoCA, or "bokeh fringes", an aberration that gives me allergic reactions. Otherwise they render quite nicely.

Compared to the newest AF-D 85/1.8, the 85/2 is slightly less sharp wide open, but only in a very small central region. It (the F2.0 AIS) has a very much flatter field, it's a lot more "coherent" over the image surface. It doesn't change in character as you travel out towards the picture edges, even at WO or one stop down. At F4.0 it's wicked sharp, and almost perfectly flat field - at portrait distances.

I had all but the HC
....the K (and presumably the HC) has more coating than the H...resulting in 1/3 F-stop more light transmission in my comparisons...
....the F2 is smaller/more compact than the 1.8

I found both the 1.8 and f2 easy to focus (at the center and off-center without focus confirming LED) on my Canon 40D with the optional manual EF-S focusing screen

I upgraded from the H to the F2 back in the 80s at the suggestion of a Nikon rep and the F2 did feel more balanced than the 1.8 on the F....
...but....

When I got the dSLR Canon I decided to try the bigger 1.8 again and decided I liked the balance of the 1.8 on the 40D....

sooooo....

I traded down from the F2 to a beater of an H and over a year I upgraded twice, 1st to a pristine H and then to the K (because it was AI'd, and I may someday get a Nikon D7K...maybe)

The H is a wonderful lens as is the F2 and while I've decided to go with the K, I would recommend ANY of the 1.8 versions...the H typically sells for $100 less than the K...

The 85/1.8 H is simply fantastic if you can stand "swirly" bokeh and heavy vignetting (on FF). It's dead sharp from wide open and much better than the 85/2 in my opinion (which is more neutral and boring).

I would have guessed you would think so...

The 85/2 is as Martin says - VERY neutral. It does the job, nothing spectacular, nothing out of what you would expect. It doesn't impose, it doesn't give the picture "character".

It's just sharp, contrasty and flat field. Boring...! (??)

Ooooo. Swirly bokeh sounds pretty cool.

Are all of the 1.8 lenses the same optical formula?

Yes...differing only in coating and cosmetics...black and silver to black barrels, and metal focusing barrel to rubber barrel the most obvious differences...

I'm on the lookout for an HC 85/1.8 and PC105/2.5, & OC 35/2 to complete my Nikkor set.

I had the K version of the 1.8 and tested multiple copies of the f2. The f2's a good little lens, akin to the 1.8AF/AF-D in performance and nicely compact. Aside from CA control though I found the 1.8 K superior in all regards. Better colour, better contrast, marginally sharper and better bokeh (although the 1.8 can go all swirly with the right background).

Personally I consider the 1.8 in K or H.C guise to be the best MF Nikkor 85. I prefer them to both the f2 and the f1.4 AI-S. It's also probably the only Nikkor I actually miss since I quite shooting Nikon (with the possible exception of the 100/2.8 E which I preferred to the 105/2.5).

The f2 reminds me more of the Series E 100/2.8. Thoroughly competent, compact but never quite outstanding.

Sorry to zombie this thread, but I figured I'd chime in since I have both lenses, specifically an 85mm Nikkor-H and an 85mm f2 (either AI or AIS). I shot them side-by-side today with my new Rokinon 85mm f1.4.

At f2 (the fastest stop they share), none are that sharp. The Rokinon is probably the sharpest and has the best micro-contrast and its aberrations are controlled best (spherical aberration, CA, vignetting, etc.)--it's actually quite impressive how boring this lens is, but that's not always a bad thing. The Nikkors are really hazy (particularly the f2, but mine has some fine scratches). The f1.8 is the least sharp in the corners by a very significant margin, but it has a more "solid" feel than the f2, like less spherical aberration and less purple fringing. In the center, it seems better than the f2 because it's equally sharp but with less spherical aberration and fringing. The Rokinon has the worst locas in the foreground by far--but it feels really nice and crisp nonetheless. The f1.8 has a lot of coma, I think; the f2 has some. The Rokinon has none or trivially little.

In terms of bokeh (again, tested at f2), the f1.4 is just nice and buttery but again kind of boring. Foreground areas that are out of focus have significant locas and look harsh, but the background is super smooth and clean. I know there is potential for swirlies but I didn't see them. The f2 has the most "nervous" bokeh (and for whatever reason the focus seems a bit deeper, but the foreground locas are fewer. There are more background locas, though. No cats eyes and minimal swirlies. I kind of like the look, although it's a bit harsh. The out of focus bubbles are clearly defined without being oniony or donuty. Not bad. The f1.8 is right in between--a beautiful vintage look, not so bad locas at all in the foreground or background but still apparent, bokeh is a little harsher than the f1.4 but smoother than the f2. There's a lot of fall-off and a serious cats eyes/swirlies, but it really draws attention to the center of the frame. This might be the worst lens technically but I love the look.

In terms of color rendering, the f1.8 has an unfortunate greenish tint. The f2 has a magenta tint. The Rokinon is amber (maybe a little green, too).

In terms of low light, the f2 is faster at f2 than the f1.8 is at f1.8. And significantly sharper with less coma (the f1.8 gains a bit between f1.8 and f2). I don't know if the f1.8 K would be faster than the f2 AI, but it might be. Bokeh is more nervous and focus deeper on the f2, of course. The Rokinon f1.4 is almost two stops faster than the Nikkors. It seems like modern coatings make a pretty big difference in terms of lens speed.

I can't pick a favorite. I'll probably end up ditching the f2 because, while it's better than the f1.8 at times, the Rokinon is "more better" and in some of the same ways. The f1.8 has great character for portraits, but it might be the worst lens technically.

Yes, I also like swirly bokeh (the king of that I think is the series e 75-150), and I like old 1960s nikkors! The only example I have handy with the lens (which I got some months back and haven't used so much yet) is this one of my cat; http://rjl.us/cat/mrq3.htm#lb7

Just a note re: the difference between the f/1.8 H vs the H.C + K:
The H has the old "mono" coating and the yellowish-green tint.
The H.C, and subsequently the K, have the NIC multi-coating which greatly reduces the yellowish-green tinge.
For that reason, I always strongly advise others---and anyone reading this who intends to shoot color--- to get one of the multi-coated versions.
