Sharon, let me start by saying I never used Apature (im not a MAC ) but find that the way LR3 'meshes' with CS5 to be pretty good. Ive probably not fully got it nailed but its good enough for me. but I also find that I hardly ever have to send my files to CS5 as for me LR3 does 95% (maybe more) of what I need.
I only send stuff that needs Layer work really.
would I want to run without CS5, probably not . Could I , probably yes.

But as Adobe provide a full 30day trial why not give it a go . (or give the LR4 beta a go) . my only small gripe with LR3 is the dual monitor use is pretty limited. but someone on here did show a good workaround that works ok.
