Why do you say 36mp is not useful in practice? I'd much rather have a 5d3 with a higher pixel count than a higher fps count. If you need a fast camera, there is both a 7d and 1dx available...why do we need another?

because 7D is not FF and 1DX is bulky and $7000

We don't know what the 5DII's replacement will be for sure. They could even continue selling the 5DII along with the new camera. On the other hand, if the latest speculation is correct for Canon and Nikon, the new D800 will appeal to the higher resolution crowd. Perhaps Canon didn't see this coming...There are a lot of photographers who enjoy shooting 35mm but want more resolution at the expense of lower fps and high iso.
Apparently Nikon is not buying the "let's combine cameras" idea and it could pay off.

They are pseudo combining though since it will have top action AF and at DX size 16MP (14MP Canon APS-C) at 6fps which isn't bad, so you get some reasonable action and reach there (5D2 APS-C is 8MP and 4fps) if you also lug the grip.

Unless of course the D800 shares the D4 sensor and someone misread 16MP as 36MP

Any reason? Possibly. It may just be a concept, but...

5D series is associated with studio/landscape/architecture work. That means resolution. A 5D3 with less resolution than the 5D2 would fail to persuade many to upgrade.

Therefore I suspect that the 5D3 will have a modest improvement in resolution, and an AF upgrade. Otherwise there might not be enough to persuade many to trade in their 5D2s and buy the new one. I am very sure that Canon are very keen to tempt the 5D2 owners to upgrade, and talk of 18 mpx and high fps won't do that in a large percentage of cases. I've been shooting 21 mpx for more than two years now, and my 18 mpx camera is a "backup" to this. I won't lay down cash for a body with less resolution than I am already accustomed to using!

That's entirely obvious I think just from the photo and the fact that APS-H is dead and buried IMO, which is the only other option.

A lot of angst over specs that don't exist for an unannounced camera.

Why would you even want to upgrade? Studio/landscape/architecture photography is shot at low ISO and high f-stops. AF or ISO is not an issue. You ain't trying to nail a shot of a moving target @ ISO 3200 in a dark reception hall, while using 85mm 1.2 lens...

Canon have obviously decided that 18 meg is the sweetspot for both full frame and crop sensors at the moment, so the new 18 meg full frame one is going to be very good, probably with improved DR

Personally I'd be happy with a 5DII with more than one usable focusing point but I fear video is the way Canon seems to be drifting and we stills guys may be left behind in the features department

I am easy to please, too.
Give me Iso 51k at the 5D MK II ISO 6.400 level. programmable Auto ISO and 100 % prewiew and -2 sensity for the center AF point (or more) at a great price (5D II intro) and I am happy.

Yeah, but I'd like to be able to if I had to. I do occasionally shoot close portraits at f/1.2-f/2.8 of people moving around at festivals, and the 5DII was never really up to the task since I needed to use the outer focus points to get the right framing. 5DII + 7D or 1D autofocus is exactly what I want, and a little bit of extra resolution is a good thing to me.

Any idea (without me combing through several pages) when the "theorized" date is?

A rumored one, Robert:

"There is a common date of February 7, 2012 for an NDA/embargo lift."

You haven't looked at my website! I often use my 5D2 at high ISO in the near dark.

The only complaint I really have about 7D vs 1D body (as my high FPS bodies) is the lack of 2 slots. I had no idea how important that was to me, save for the one time I didn't do ON SITE back up, and had a few corrupted images. Weren't important images to me, but who is to say that they would've have been to the person I was photographing? I had plenty of other images, but it was a fight I was photographing. Saying that fight ended in one shot...and I missed it. See what I mean?

By the same logic of more resolution, someoen could say, well why do you need more, don't you've got genuine fractals? (not saying I agree with this mindset. I want BOTH fps and MP).

Will the 5D3/x be faster than the 5D2 for VBT and shutterlag?

I hope so. It seemed like the 5D2 was just as slow as the 5D1.

In use, I never really cared, btu when I compared it...I wasn't happy.

Is that sensor dead? I've heard a few say it is and a few say it's not.

Sorry can't give specific details in viewfinder blackout time and shutter lag, all I can tell you is I held a camera that felt like a 7D but it was no 7D . The mirror box was different and the move of the mirror had more 'slap' than the 7D. This was right after I signed a paper that told me I was not allowed to give specs of the camera I held, but it did not say anything about not being allowed to say I held a camera that looked very similar to a camera given to some employee on an EOSfun trip for Kenya :-)

So reading and interpretimg your words they created a 7D X. A 7D FF follow up. And the 5D X announcment on photokina will be the FF MP monster so many people are crying for ...

Now I know ... nothing ...

Ralph I wished they invited me to Kenya to do in the field testing of new gear, that would be my ultimate kind of EOSfun :-) So far the only invitations I got from Canon are for boring presentations and meetings on Investor Relations for my customers

C300 is 11k? So the 5DX will simply be the best most revolutionary video DSLR ever, it just has to be...if it's not Canon forfeits the market dominance they've established. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Question is, what does superior video give us photographers? 1DX-like autofocus? Because that face-detection I tried on the 1DX at Imaging USA could TRULY rock some

Also, having used pro camcorders like the Sony PD170 and Z1U for years before switching to the 5d2, articulating screens are used professionally everyday and have proven to be quite durable. I've used lots of them, knocked cameras over with the screens open, shot in temps from -60f to 115f, had them on planes in a carry-on and checked bags, tossed them in the car without a case, hiked mountains with the camera in a hiking backpack and so on and never had an issue. The cameras looked like hell from use, but functioned perfectly. In case you can't tell, I'm hoping for someone to put an articulated screen on a pro camera, I use live view a lot with my MF lenses, it would make life a lot easier.

I hope Canon will not put 7D Auto Focus on 5DIII. It will be a terrible mistake. Instead of 7D auto focus please Canon leave it as it is.
