Having recently replaced the standard neck straps on my cameras with a Black Rapid sling strap, I was finding certain situations where the Black Rapid was just too much (bulky, unnecessary). For example, if I just wanted to pull the camera out of the bag for a couple quick photo's the Black Rapid tended to get in the way more than even the manufacturer-supplied neck straps. But if I removed the BR then I would be carrying the camera around without anything at all, which was not a particularly comfortable feeling. So I went searching for a wrist strap and found the Crumpler Noose at B&H:
From what I can gather thru a few internet searches this is a fairly new product; which works great for me. One thing it doesn't come with though is a quick release clip, which would allow me to move it easily from one camera to another. But for that I just salvaged a clip from the strap of a LowePro point-and-shoot bag and the problem was solved. The only thing I don't like about the clip is it's longer than needed and has a tendency to slide back and forth through the lug eyelet. However a little black electrical tape took care of that issue. In the meantime I'll be on the lookout for a different plastic release clip. If anyone has a suggestion for a different clip I'd appreciate hearing it. A few photo's of what I did can be seen at:
Love the idea. I had the same feelings and looking for something to offset the BR when I don't need it. Normal neck straps are to much for quick shooting. I think I'll get this Crumpler Noose as well and hopefully find a clip like you did. Great idea!!!
can't say i really like the "noose" idea. it is free sliding and that in itself creates a potential wrist issue. if under tension it continues to tighten. if were to find oneself in a situation where the webbing is caught on/in something where there is a pulling/tensioning potential this is not what i would want to have on. the original clip has a reasonable breakaway potential but not the strap itself as it must hold the weight of a camera with some reasonable swing. if there is a breakaway ability what is its limit before harm can occur and to who (man, woman, child)?
a fixed sized loop with a sliding cinch is a safer option. this on the other hand..... you might just end up using the other hand.
I'm not crazy about having something as heavy as a DSLR on a dangling wrist strap (though I do use a Gordy's on my NEX). For my D700, I use a Camdapter, which for me is a much more positive grip. I rarely use a neck strap with it. Either the camera is welded to my wrist with the Camdapter, or it's in the Domke bag over my shoulder.
I have wrist straps for all my cameras. For me they function as more of a fail safe measure when in the studio. A DSLR will put some strain on the wrist and it also hangs too low for me. However if I bump into some thing and lose my grip on the camera its not going to the floor. I found this site a few years ago and have all my straps custom made to my specifications. Also much cheaper too. Look under bags & cameras. Great selection of hardware as well.
I like having a wrist-strap on my SLR, but I prefer the camera not to be hanging, as seems to be the case with the Crumpler noose.
I use a matin strap, which holds the camera to my palm. It means I can have my arms by my sides while walking around, and can almost completely relax my grip on the camera, but the camera is still right where I need it. For me, getting rid of the annoyance of most straps, while still being able to relax while holding my camera, is a huge advantage. The one I use is similar to this, and I most often find it useful for street shooting: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004FS6QY2
EDIT: I should explain, the strap connects to the right-side strap lug of the camera, as well as a base-plate which sits underneath the camera. The base plate screws into the tripod mount, has another female tripod thread underneath it (so you can still attach a QR plate), and also has an RRS style dove-tail, so it can itself be used as a QR plate for some heads.
