p.1 #1 · D3 shutter replacement

Sorry im new here and i used the search function first to try to find my answer but it wasn't returning the results i wanted exactly.

Does anyone know how much around about the shutter replacement is going to be?
My shutter died on mine, and i've since went back to my D90 for now, as my local camera shop won't even touch it, because it's better than anything they sell, so they're afraid of it.

Thanks.
Chris

pretty sure Keh just said 125 for the labor and 175 for the part, so 300 dollars isn't bad at all.

If you send to Nikon it will be in the $400 range. If Keh will do it for $300 that would be a great price.

yup confirmed the price of 300. The shutter is only 175 from Nikon, but since it's nikon, they mark it up of course, Keh is doing it a little above mark up the girl said. 35 bucks to have it rush fixed, meaning turn around time is now 3 days instead of 3 to 4 weeks. I can live with that.

Don't hesitate, I read that Nikon is going to discontinue selling parts to repair shops.

Nikon USA sent a letter to all independent camera repair shops in the US that they will no longer be able to order parts from Nikon USA. Nikon will continue to supply parts to authorized repair centers.

p.1 #7 · D3 shutter replacement

I just had my D3 to Nikon Melville for some "freshening up". Here is what they did:

1) Replaced shutter. The camera had 375000 on it and was still going strong. I just wanted to start my 2012 season with a fresh shutter. I'll call it preventative maintenance.
2) Replaced zoom button assembly (left side of screen) as the zoom button fell out. Includes all of the buttons in that row.
3) Clean fogged LCD/replaced LCD glass seal
4) Replace CF door as grip was worn smooth
5) Clean sensor
6) Check and adjust AF as necessary.

They also replaced all of the grips without me asking. Apparently, most of them need to be removed to service the camera. They also touched up a small scratch on the flash shoe/prism. I got the camera back in 9 days and this was during the Christmas holidays. The total for all of this was $471 which I thought was very reasonable. The camera looks and feels new again.

That is so a-typical it hurts. Are you NPS? Man I wish I got 9 day service! Glad they took good care of you.

For the extra $100 I'd send it to Nikon, they will clean the sensor and calibrate everything as part of the shutter replacement. Likely lots of other stuff.

As for the timing, I've sent various bodies and lenses to Nikon west coast and they are generally back in 10-15 days. They usually say 10days from receipt, I think they always met that.

Generally it comes back in better condition than it was before (better AF or metering), but once they fixed one issue on a 24-70 and broke something else that worked perfect. In that case it went back with a nasty letter about the fact they clearly didn't do an QA on it before shipping back to me... it came back perfect in every way and with two trips I think it was gone maybe 20 days.

No, I am not a NPS member. I was also pretty surprised as well that I got it back so fast, especially during the Holidays.

i think im getting that fogging look in my um, lcd i believe. I can't take a picture of it, but it looks way different on the D3 than it does on the D90. I don't know if they will fix that as well as the shutter, but i've been hearing good things about the melville office, so maybe they will do that too in conjunction with my shutter replacement. I'm going to try to call them today and find out.

EDIT: Happy to report that i have 575,827 clicks on the original shutter. They were surprised very much by this as the tech in the email said they usually get them in to be replaced with a little over 300k to 400k.
