p.1 #1 · My splitscreen solution 5D MKI 100%

Hi,
for all who are still on the search for a splitscreen solution for a 5D
maybe this will help.
Here in a local store is bought a screen for Leica R8 for 25 euro,
an put it in and it just works perfect.
no need to shim anything.

With a chiped adapter everything works very fine.

Just like my old SLR.

the circle at the green dot is the edge of microprism
the circle at the red dot is the edge of the hirzontal splitscreen.

if you look through the cam you hardly notice that its little shifted sidewise
perhaps it is good that its little shifted upside down, so the splitscreen
is not over the middle AF point.

regards
reinhard

Impressive image, have no idea how you did that :-)

However, if the stake is 25-30€ I would strongly recommend the native Canon EG-S (no split-screen, no micro-prism). It enables you to focus anywhere in the screen, not just the center. That's at least what I want to do - seldom the center is my focus (no phun intended) when using fast glass. Re-composition dont work when DOF is shallow.

(this is about 5DMkII, but I think the corresponding matte is called EE-S for the 5D)

of course, if the EG-S works for you, you dont need this one.
i had always problems with the EE-S, especially in low light.

i only did a fast testing,
after switching to my chiped adapter with the zeiss 50mm 1,7
metering seems to be fine.
with my chiped samyang 85mm 1,4 everthing looks fine.

AF happens behind the (partial) mirror, the focussing screen has no impact on this. The display of the focus points (red squares) is in front of the focussing screen (closer to the eye), and also not affected by the focussing screen.
I think the advantage of your solution is the cheaper cost compared to getting something like a $100+ KatzEye, right?

hi,
the split of the screen is just better visible if there is no square of the AF point
over it. Of course it does not affect the AF function.

I never had the KatzEye but several other. and none of them worked fine for me.
So maybe you are right.

I did this back in 2009 https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/751625
The Ee-S and Eg-S are better.

Try not to waste your money. I had many screens, and matte screen is better for manual focus. Others will tend to black out after f/4 or f/5.6.

I have nearly the same issue focusing with Ee-S on 5DC as with a stock screen.
Though, I can't make an exclusive claim since I have not made a proper test between both screens.
I also found myself being able to focus f8 glas with Ee-S in fairly challenging conditions. How well is another question...

I find focusing with the EE-S screen extremely difficult at f1.4, a split screen might be what I need. At that price it might be worth a try. Is there a specific part number I should be looking for?
