p.1 #1 · Help with corrupted files in Lightroom

When review a shoot in Lightroom, I've noticed a bunch of images are getting corrupted, maybe 1 in 500 and end up looking like the enclosed example.

What's even wierder is that if I delete the file and then import the same file from a back up drive, it is corrupted in the same way.

Weirder still is that I then take the raw file off another backup and place it on the desktop, bypass Lightroom and open the raw in Bridge, I end up with the same corruption.

It does not seem to be inherintly corrupted from the original capture because whe I originally imported the file into Lightroom, the preview looks fine. Then, I click on the file to enlarge it or something and it turns like this.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on here? I could almost buy the theory of a corrupted drive but, replacing the files frmo another drive still results in the corruption so, not sure what to think. Scary though becasue if this problem accelerates, I could lose my whole archive theoretically.

Well my first guess is a bad card. The preview you are seeing in LR is the imbedded jpg file. Then when you enlarge the file it’s loading the RAW file data. But if you’re saying the file was fine from the original import when viewing at 100%, then it’s hard to say what’s going on. So if the file was fine at one time, I’d try a different RAW converter and see what happens.

Memory card or card reader is a good first guess. Try running the file through the free standalone Adobe DNG converter to see if it can read it.

Thanks for the feedback, I suspect card as well since all the copies seem to be corrupted, will try the adobe converter thing.

If it was corrupted when copied from the camera buffer onto the card then there is nothing you can do except try to extract the imbedded jpg preview image. If it was ok on the card then it might have been corrupted when transferring elsewhere, and that can be managed with utilities that actually verify file copies at the time of copying so that any problems are found before you wipe the original from the card.

Once a card is suspect you might as well toss it away and get a new one - or get a new one first in case you don't need to toss the old one.

Be aware that the iffy copying may be the result of a defective cable or card reader rather than a defective card. There are several variables to be eliminated but having a new card is likely to ease your mind during that process.

I'll bet that all your copies came from the same import. i.e. you copied from card to HDD, then from HDD to backup.

If that is the case, then the solution is easy: Next time you take the photos off the card, import to your HDD. Then perform a separate copy from card -> backup.

At some point, you will find another duff image. Check the backup and it will probably be there and be fine. At that point, buy a new reader.

I doubt it is the card.
