p.1 #1 · College Hockey

#4 Colgate came to little old Ferris State for a two game series. The Bulldogs from Ferris swept the series and sent the Raiders home. I have enjoyed shooting hockey at Ferris. Hadn't attended hockey much so I've got a lot to learn but it's been a fun ride.

I'm posting a nine shot goalie series and a couple others from the night. Let me know what you think!

Hey Rob: I was using a Canon MkIV with the 70-200 f/2.8 II. I was using AV mode, ISO 2000, and my shutter speed varied from 1/1600th to 1/2500th. All thru the glass of course. This rink has good light but no place to shoot without glass. Thanks for asking!

Nice series. Great light in that rink! ISO 2000 and 1/2000?! Nice.

Ben, in general, I'm not a fan of posting long (9 shots?) bursts like this - it tells me you can't decide which shot is the best so you post them all. I have my own opinion on which shot I would pick but would be curious to hear which one you'd select?

Dennis: Thanks for commenting. I haven't shot hockey long and I thought it was kind of neat to have the puck visible for such a long time, without other players interfering with the view. I actually sent the seventh shot to the school but they used another shot (not from this sequence) in the story. I suppose after you shoot hockey for a while you get numerous multiple exposures like this but a novelty for me. Have a great new year and thanks for your response.

Ben...I agree with Dennis and I'd eliminate those middle 4 shots for starters because there really isn't much going on there from frame to frame except the player on the left. Out of the first four....my choice with be #4 for the keeper.

Ben,

I understand. FWIW, if the shot had resulted in a goal, I think number 3 or 4 would tell the best story, especially since the goalie's eyes are visible. If the shot resulted in a "PING" off the post, then number 2 shows this the best, or maybe number 6 implies a save Vs a goal? I like the fact that the puck is sort of balancing on his shoulder, and the final result is in doubt. In number 7, it almost looks like the puck is flying past him (especially if you don't know the result, or if you didn't see the earlier shots in the sequence) which would lead the viewer to think a goal had been scored.

Anyway, this is pretty subjective, so thanks for sharing some great shots.

Hi Ben, As somebody who shoots about 20 high school hockey games per season and as a fan of the game, I just want to say that I think the series with the puck clanging off the post is pretty cool. A very rare capture as far as I'm concerned and that makes 'em good.

Also think you nailed your exposure and your white balance really well.

So, I like the puck off the post shots and the very last skater shot is good too. Nice work.

Steve

(Not that shooting 20 games per year makes me any kind of an expert -- quite the contrary. I appreciate it when I see a few shots that I'd find hard to come by.)

Wow Ben, I am completely jealous of the light you had to work with. I might sacrifice a body part or two for that kind of light. Nice job!
