The weather in the Florida Panhandle has been incredible...mid 70s today; warm enough to shuck the shoes, grab the dog and head for Eden Gradens State Park.

I really love the lighting and colors in this shot. A minor nit-pick is that it seems cropped a bit tight for me (elbow on the left, tip of stick on the right, and foot at the bottom) and I think I would have liked to see a little more breathing room. Fantastic shot overall though.

Jon, thank you. I understand what you are saying, but when you photograph active children, you take what you can get. Birdie, thank you for taking the time to comment.

I like the fact that there are many elements in the photo, it seems to tell a story, although I can't quite figure out what the kids are doing. A moment well captured.

The smaller boy is "playing the drums," and his older brother is doing whatever older brothers do to aggravate their younger siblings.

Take two gorgeous kids, mix in some sunshine, some sand, some clouds and some water and you have all the ingredients for a good photograph. These two are the boys of one of my coworkers, who was kind enough to allow me to use them as my models. I let them be boys while keeping the camera to my eye. You cannot script a shot like this one.

I think the framing adds character to the shot, from the thumbnail it looks like they are 2 warriors fighting on the top of the world, both vying for attention and indeed space in the frame.

The dynamic range in this shot is unreal Makes think of the sun filled summer days of my youth.

This is a very unusual shot. It reminds me of something out of a 50's era movie. It has some quality of a special scene that I can't quite put my finger on. Also if you let your eye wander a bit the water looks like a sky with the kids on a high cliff. I like it a lot, as it's one of the more captivating pictures I've seen here in the WA in a while.

Like most kids, these two can be warriors one moment, and hugging each other the next. These boys are incredibly photogenic; they always make me look good.

Very interesting observations, Mark. I had not thought about the reflection of the sky in the water creating a perception of a cliff, but now that you mention it I can easily see it, and I'm getting a little queasy thinking about that dropoff. Let me know if you come up with the name of that movie.

Great shot! The color, sharpness, light and dynamic range are exceptional. Did you do any special processing? ~Jamie

Hi Jamie,

I am glad you like the photograph, and thank you for your comments.

The magic comes from the Leica M9 and a Summilux 50mm f/1.4 lens. I took shots that afternoon with both the M9 and with a Canon 135mm f/2.0 mounted on a 1Ds Mark III, and although the shots taken with the Canon setup were very good, they were no match, in terms of color, dynamic range and sharpness, for those taken with the M9. I have had the M9 for less than a year, and I almost gave up on it before getting accustomed to Rangefinder focusing, but I am happy that I stuck with it. I still miss a few shots occasionally, but the keepers are the reward for perseverance.

I did nothing special in the way of processing. In Lightroom I boosted the contrast slightly, +13 for saturation, and a small amount of sharpening.

Regards,
Robert
