Is the E-Mount 50 1.8 a Macro like the XF 60? There is currently not a Fuji 23/24mm (except for the x100 itself) for comparison, and shockingly, neither is there a Sony E mount fast normal lens like the Fuji 35 1.4. The Fuji 18 pancake is very small - and has a complex lens design, unlike the E-mount 16 for instance - so if it delivers at F2, Sony has nothing to compare with. So, it's interesting as there really are not direct comparisons which can be made with these systems with regard to lenses. What is amazing is that Fuji is releasing these fast primes from the get go, unlike Sony which even now is still missing important focal lengths like a fast normal. ...Show more →
No direct comparisons, but I think it goes a long way of showing that the Sony lenses are not as gargantuan as some people make them out to be. The 50mm for instance includes OSS.
And while fast primes appeals to a certain group of shooters, it is clear that Fuji leaves a pretty large gap in the lineup. No zooms, nothing wider than 18mm, nothing longer than 60.
I also think it's a stretch to call a 64.5x40.6mm lens a pancake. In comparison Sony has a 50mm f/1.4 for alpha mount about the same size (65.5x43mm), which I don't think you would consider a pancake. Pancakes are typically in the 20-25mm range. As it's almost twice as large, 2-3x more expensive, and at an easier focal length, it certainly should perform better than the 16mm Sony kit lens.
I think it's clear that Sony started with a consumer focus, and is slowly building out a system that appeals to enthusiasts, while Fuji skips the consumers and heads straight to enthusiast land, and is likely to stay there (which I regard as unfortunate, because not all consumer features are bad. Sony kills Fuji on video and features).
It is remarkably like the Contax G2. Perhaps the camera I've been waiting for. If someone produces an adapter for the Contax G lenses to go on it, I may just cancel my NEX-7 order (since it appears I won't be getting my pre-order from Amazon anytime soon), and get this instead. I do wish it had a tilting LCD like the NEX-7, but that might be the only thing I can think of off hand that it might benefit from. Should be interesting, once the camera appears in the flesh, how corner performance is with alt lenses like the Contax G and Leica M-mount lenses.
This camera is going to win camera of the year for 2012! I called it! Shoot-gun!!
Fuji is really impressing me.
Everyone wondered what it would be like to have an interchangeable X100. Seems like they did it, including the hybrid viewfinder in a compact body with a prime lens kit at 50mm. I got the Fuji x10 yesterday after selling my Nex 5N. I hated the idea of looking for the best focal length from different vintage lenses then wondering if there was an adapter for it. It was costing more then if Sony would just release fast primes for their system!!
Fuji did in one year what Sony was dragging their feet about
Fuji did in one year what CaNikon didn't know for decades
I will eventually get the Pro
But for now I'm going out with my new X10 and set it to Velvia, zoom out to 112mm and maintain that f2.8!
Once the camera is officially announced (tomorrow), and once (hopefully excellent) sample shots are available, I predict that this beautiful camera will cause the same amount of excitement as the x100 one year ago. At that time dpreview wrote that the x100 caused more curiosity and clicks than most cameras in the last years...
@Lotusmn50: I think you can pre-order the lenses atleast, on amazon
Seems I've missed most of the discussion so I'll just say "yay" & wait for the official spec tomorrow. Seems it's really only the auto-focus performance that is the question for me now, as everything else sounds good (despite not actually being announced yet...)
Steve Huff had this up on his website this afternoon, tried to get a pre-order on the camera but they were already gone. I did get the 18 and 60 mm lenses. I thought the 35 would come with the camera but seems it might be sold body only.
"Amazon just put up the Pro-1X Body at $1699 – Get in now IF you want this system when it launches! My order is in! The lenses went up for pre-order yesterday and have now been taken down as Amazon sold a ton of them already. I expect the body will last about as long as the lenses."
$1700 seems a little steep to me seeing that the Sony is $1100. Can't wait to see what Fuji has to say tomorrow. Hope there's a better focusing system and the samples are great.
Price seems high although lenses are reasonable enough.
The sensor had better stun.
It is handsome enough. I do wish they'd rethink the manual controls a bit. I've grown to love the lock on the mode dial on the Ricoh and prefer the finger wheel mounted near the shutter button for shutter speeds. Eye to camera this is a much better place for that, for me, if shooting manually. The exposure comp dial on the X100 (and other X cameras now) is a love hate thing for many; some turn too easily; some have the right feel but can still get knocked. I think I'd bow to modernism on that one too and have that assigned to a finger dial; I wish I could do this with the Ricoh - the hardware is there, just needs a little firmware code.
Re: lenses, are these "focus by wire" again, or do we get a real ring?
Speed of autofocus and operation will definitelyneed to be nice and quick. $1,700 seems a lot of money for an apsc camera... But I think I'd grt over that if it's as good as one hopes... We well have to see. I guess we'd be looking at £1200-£1500 body only in the uk? High price.... Needs to be close to perfect I think!

I bet that hack made a nice amount through referrals. Hopefully I can get a pre-order on the body in tomorrow.
