netgarden: Yes, I used a flash, although I don't think it made a lot of difference vis-a-vis some I took w/out flash.

eskimochaos: Feel free to apply some PP -- I'm interested in what you would do with the image.

Imagemaster: where are the kingfishers? Just curious. they're fun birds, and I have only seen them in Florida.

It's hardly pushing the 7D @ ISO 1600. Heck I used my old 1D II at ISO 1600 when needed and 7D is quite a bit better.

Vancouver Island. They are fairly common in the Pacific Northwest.

If you dont have to do extensive cropping (more than 50%) you are not underexposed, and you know your way around noise reduction, iso 1600 is very good, and even 3200 is good. this is one that is about iso 3200

Imagemaster -- thanks for the word on the kingfishers. They're great birds to watch and photograph!

Imagemaster and BrianO: thanks for the PP examples. I will pay attention to those things next time. I appreciate your time and effort.

all: thanks for the encouraging comments and wisdom on using the 7D at ISO 1600. I'm sure I'll have the opportunity to try it again soon!

Amazing bird images posted here....clearly a great mix of talent and gear!!

Can any 7D users comment on the IQ at ISO 10 - 200? Would it be better or are higher settings better on the 7D? Asking because I'm thinking 7D or 1D3 at the moment....my upgrade from a 40D.

PS: That shrimp thing looks really pissed off!!

The ISO 100 through ISO 400 images are superb, and even ISO 800 is very clean. I try to shoot at the lowest ISO setting that will give a well-exposed image, because the less amplification applied the higher the signal-to-noise ratio and the cleaner the image, but except in strong shadow areas I can barely notice any difference in image quality between ISO 50 & 100, or between 200 & 400.

In informal testing I actually found ISO 160 to be the best, and 320 to be marginally better than either 200 or 400, so those are the two setting I use unless something else is absolutely needed.

with every camera, the lower the ISO the better. I can tell the difference between iso 200 and 100 on 7D at 100% before noise reduction. that much said, it is very usuable to 1600, and even at 3200, but have to be more careful with selective noise reduction.
there was a very good article from a birder, comparing the detail produced by the 7D and 1d3, and found even though 7d has slightly more noise per pixel at a given iso, it produces more detail. some say 7D has the second best autofocus in canon lineup (behind 1d4). many say a properly funcitoning 1d3 or even a 1d2 i better.

Imagemaster--How do you get so close to a kingfisher with only 400mm to work with, they never get closer than 100 feet for me?

7D does quite well at higher ISO's but needs noise reduction. Processing in LR3 gives great results.
