I think the 35mm lens is more "normal" and the 24mm lens is more dramatic. It depends what you're looking for. However, you can't replicate a 35mm lens by simply cropping a photo taken with a 24mm lens.

Yep. The 35 is more a "normal" but with the downside of having to deal with the head stretching at the edges of a more dramatic wide lens. With a 50, you get the "normal" but without the head stretching issue.
