Hi Guys:
Since I purchased my 50D two years ago, and the 10-22mm six month after that on Ebay...I have had nothing but garbage pictures quality wise and I just need your opinion on where the problem might be, when i shoot indoor the quality is pretty good, outdoors its horrible, I have tried changing setups and nothing work, the focus beeps and the camera displays the focus points with no problem.
I shoot HDR so when i combine images they look even worse, now I'm back using my old trusty Nikon D50 yes, the quality is so much better using a Sigma 10-20mm!
here are the shots and the specs, all help is much appreciated
-f.11
-iso 400
-10mm
-exp. 1/10
The overexposure is not helping matters. I'm not sure what is normal for that lens, but the CA looks to be a bit much. You should correct for the CA prior to merging as an HDR.
1. These were shot at 1/10 SS - were you using a tripod? Handhold at 1/10 is not a good idea when testing out a lens.
2. Does the lens have a hood and were you using it?
3. Two of the three look to be over exposed. Their exif data indicates the camera was in manual mode which can be ok, but cannot tell if you had the exposure meter centered.
I would suggest you get to a more controlled situation in order to test. Use a tripod, have the sun at your back and pick a target that is in the sun light. Set the camera to only use the center focal point, use mirror lock up and put the timer on 2 sec.
Many zoom lenses are challanged at their extreems i.e. shortest and longest mm fl. Do a test at 10mm, then do another shot backed off a tad, say to 12mm. You will also want to test the aperture capabilities. Many lenses tend to perform their best at f/8.0 and likewise can struggle at the widest opening and most closed settings (f/22 or greater).
Conducting tests with a solid base of settings will help you determine the capability of your lens and camera combo.
I dont know why, but I agree that the quality is way way off.
I had a Canon 10-22 on a 50D. Sharper than my 17-40 (on FF).
Are you using a lens hood?
Scott
Thank you all so much!
I took my old faithful Nikon 50D at that very same time, have a Sigma 10-20mm on IT, that old thing I have been abusing for 6 years straight, took it with me at the same time and shots this look at f.22 cropped. I had a tripod like always and no lens hood i didn't care to i only wanted to compare and test. the exposure meter was centered. thank you Matt,chan,sbme,eb1, jlandue and dmacmillan for you input, I appreciated.
George, the HDR work on your facebook page is good. I assume you've already set up your Nikon, done an HDR shoot and then attempted to receate it with the Canon combo, correct? At this point it would be good to try and separate lens capability vs the body. Hopefully it's the lens at fault (my bet). Again a controlled set of tests... ergo earlier post comments.
Brendan, I took the filter off pre shooting, but anyway, sent the lens out to Canon and they emailed me back yesterday, it will cost $105 to bring back to spec, paid and awaiting the arrival, I will post shots after, and now I have a 7D instead of 50
