p.2 #1 · What's your biggest dissapointment (lens)?

My bigest disappointments were the SMC Pentax 18/3.5, Olympus Zuiko 55/1.2, and Nikkor * ED 400/3.5. These disappointments were cured by selling them and buying the Tokina AT-X 17/3.5, Zuiko 50/1.2, and Nikkor ED 500/4 P; none of which I currently own.

C/Y 28/2.8 on the NEX. It's not really bad, but I found it to be not noticeably better than the kit at the corresponding FL. Also, really hard to focus due to short throw.

Up until now I did not really have a disappointment in the lenses I got. Maybe the Canon 85/1.8 was somehow a let down, but other than that I found my lenses always better than me ( that's not a big deal if you hang around here in the alt forum, you know what works ). I am still waiting to send my ZM35 to Zeiss because while I know it can be sharp, I don't get it always.

Same here with the Canon 85mm 1.8.

I think that's when I started realizing a lot of people on forums talk about gear more than they use gear.

It's not an easy question, we've all had disappointments, but which one is the biggest? For me it's probably the Leica R 50/1.4 E60 which I intended to buy, compared with my own R 50/2.0 E55, and found too similar to justify. It doesn't make it (Leica R 50/1.4 E60) a bad lens, but it was a big disappointment relative to my expectations.

Interesting thread idea, but I have to disagree with your listing of two of the lenses you chose: the E60 50 Lux-R and the Contax 85/1.4. These are both really fantastic lenses, and the fact that you failed to explore them enough, or read up enough on their respective strengths/weaknesses doesn't make them deserving of such a label. I do agree with you about the 80 Lux though, one of my all-time favorite lenses, and I really should get one again and Leitax it to my Nikon.

Rant aside, I am going to make the same faux-pas now myself I usually do enough research to avoid things like this, but one time I really failed, with the ZF.2 50/2 MP. Everything I read made me believe it was a mini-100MP but nothing could be further from the truth. Extremely weak far corners (just a few percent), nasty field curvature, too much DoF at f/2, and a total lack of the magic which makes me love the 100MP so much. It took me maybe 1 month to admit to myself that I really didn't like it, and another month of heavy experimentation to find good enough reasons to keep it anyway. It is really strong for certain applications, and I keep it for that, but I do not love it.

Another big disappointment for me was the Hasselblad 203FE. I love the lenses, I knew that already, and I love the Hasselblad form factor in general, but this camera just disappointed me. I know a few people who thought it was the perfect MF film camera, but I just find it weird, difficult to use, with a couple of design niggles which annoy me to no end, to the point that I am now in the process of replacing it with a Rolleiflex 6008i.

A mild disappointment was the result of acquiring a Linhof Master Technika. I find it too heavy, too chunky and the movements too limiting to justify the extra cost over, say, a Charmonix 45N2. I will sell the Linhof sometime in the coming months and get the Chamonix.

Other than that, I have generally managed to do good enough research to avoid these disappointments.

That's surprising (to me)... The nFD 300/2.8 L is pretty awesome - one of my favorite lenses! It's the same from 2.8 thu to f/11 - well other than the DOF differences. I would have thought that the 400/2.8 was on par.

My experience with the FD 400mm f/2.8 L reminded me that expectations and how well they're met are heavily dependant on the user's past experience. Until I used that lens I didn't understand the appeal of high-saturation films like Velvia. Neither did I understand the appeal of AF and IS; the ergonomic design of that lens pretty much requried electronic help. I'm accustomed to lenses that are close to diffraction-limited at full aperture, don't produce muddy colors, and are easy to use manually.

I recognize that a sample size of one isn't enough to paint with a broad brush but after using that lens my prejudice is that the hype that seems to be accepted about Canon "L" lenses is just that: hype.

The biggest disappointment definitely was the Canon 300/4 IS. Not because it's utter crap or I had huge expectations for it, but because it's just so.... blah. Boring and dull.
I'm always itching for the Leica 280/4 APO. But for the little use it'll probably get it's not exactly cheap.

Yes, I agree completely. I had this lens, but really wasn't disappointed becuase I didn't have high expectations for it. ;-)

Voigt 125. Spent ~1400$ on it for manual focus, and when I finally got my Sigma 150 OS I found the Sigma to be sharper, better corrected apochromatically, and with AF/IS. Oh and cheaper.

Your 'disappointment' can probably net you a $600 profit. We should all be so unlucky...

Nikkor 14-24 on my 5D Mk II, but I'm sure it was strictly a case of operator error. I simply couldn't judge when the lens was properly focused through the viewfinder.

My biggest disappointment was the ZE 50/1.4.

After doing a lot of research, reading owner comments, and viewing photos, I had extremely high hopes, only to be dashed by extreme focus shift and a general lack of "wow factor" images, especially closer up. To top things off, I had sold a wonderful EF 50/1.4 to help finance this lens. I returned the ZE lens within a day or two.

If this had been my first Zeiss lens, I probably would not have bought any more. Fortunately, I already owned the ZE 21 and ZE 35/2, so I knew it was possible to do better. Since then, I bought a Contax Zeiss 50/1.4 and am extremely happy with its performance, at less than half the cost of the ZE.

The experience turned me against the idea of the ZE 85/1.4 because of focus shift problems. So instead, decided to purchase the Samyang 85/1.4, which I am very happy with (again, at a terrific bargain in comparison to the ZE).

Canon 24-70L
Before I bought a 5D2 with this lens, I had a 450D + Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 Macro. I liked the 450D+Sigma combo very much. It didn't let me down ever.
My expectations of the 24-70L were maybe too high, but it didn't give me the same feeling as with my 18-50. Result: used the 24-70L about 5 times, sold it at 90% the price I paid and bought the Zeiss 100/2... ok, that wasn't very logical, but I already used my Sigma 50 as walk around AF lens.

Samyang (Rokinon) 85mm f/1.4

I really wanted to like the lens. People seemed to have nothing but good things to say about it, including its performance wide open. However, I didn't like the Chromatic Aberration and purple fringing of the lens wide open. I just didn't care much for the results. I had sold my Canon EF 100 f/2 a little before purchasing the Rokinon and regret doing so as the price jumped up immediately afterward.

I ended up selling it and relegated most wide open photography to my Nikon 50 f/1.4 Ai which works very well on a crop camera.

My Contax 50/1.7 doesn't WoW me, I always come away with a meh feeling.
I'll give it another chance with the NEX 7.

any autofocus lens, though this is really a camera plus lens combo thing. never found one with a focus ring that doesn't annoy me and have never found one where autofocus is good enough for me not to care. no matter how nice the lens is i can't seem to get over the aggravation of using it.

Have you ever tried an EF 500/4L IS on a 1D-series body?

My biggest disappointment is the Fujinon 23mm lens in the x100.
It's a fantastic lens and very well suited to the x100 except for one thing - flare, oh and ghosts. It really hurts how good this lens is and how easily it's let down by flare and ghosting.

Luckily I have some of the flare under control with a 7quid extendable rubber hood

ha, no. i don't think a 500/4 would be my cup of tea, and i know from experience (with older bodies) that i don't like bodies with built in vertical grips. the most advanced canon combo i've tried was the 7D with 70-200/2.8. i've also played a bit with the D700, but only with lesser autofocus lenses.

Really... My Contax 50/1.4 definitely wows me. Not in every possible application, but for some uses it's really great (incredible pop and central sharpness at mid distance, ~f/2.8).
