p.1 #1 · Help! virus?

When I google and click on the site I want, it has been "redirected" to some similars but not the site I want. very frustrated! The "redirect" command is given from this "gimmeAnswers.org"

How do I get rid of it? I tried to look in the cookies, but of no use.

Is your AV running? I assume you have one. One sure way is to try to go to an AV website. Many virii will block them.

It's called the 're-direct' virus. Norton used to have a specific tool for it. Not sure if they still do. It is very tricky and a lot of AV software do not detect and remove it sucessfully.

As above, try Malwarebyts.

Run it in Safe Mode with Networking. Tick the option to do a FULL scan. When it finishes, it might require a restart to complete.

There are other options as well. Many of these virus's will take more than one program to get rid of them.

Next option is a OnLine Scan as it has probably disabled your own antivirus, firewalls etc.

Another program to run before or after Malwarebytes would be SuperAntiSpyware, again, in Safe Mode and tick all options and run in a full scan.

In both cases, use Safe Mode with Networking and run a update before scanning.

Try that and see what happens

Two free anti-virus tools I like and use (one mentioned above):

www.malwarebytes.com

www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ <--- link may have changed

Keep both updated at least weekly and if you are having problems, boot in safe mode and run both.
Best,
Andy

As an IT geek before I got into photography as my mainline, malwarebytes is a lifesaver. Anyone who connects their machine to that darn Interweb should scan with malwarebytes every couple of weeks.

I find ComboFix can deal with this type of problems really well. Give it a try and check the log file after the scan.

+1

There are more than one of them and they are really nasty. Killed one of my old computers. I had a running support case with Microsoft for 3 weeks and they couldn't help me fix it. Try Malwarebytes, Kapersky, Vipre, etc. If your computer pops up offers to scan your computer and it look sort of like official Microsoft but not exactly, what you have there is hostageware. The next thing will be the first offer about what it will cost you to fix it..... which of course doesn't and the game continues until you catch on and stop paying (or they drain your credit card account).

Good luck.

Combofix is not a general purpose malware remover and should not be used as such. It is a targeted (with scripts, written by someone who knows what the hell he's doing) app that can leave your computer unbootable if you happen to be unlucky in just running it randomly.

Sign up for a Bleeping Computer account and follow the instructions about how to post your symptoms (Are you new to Bleeping Computer?) You will be assigned a helper to guide you through the disinfection process. The results are generally good, but with some infections the only recourse is to format and start over.

Which is why I image my OS drive every month. Formats are so freaking painful...

Hi everyone
Happy Xmas Hols

My recommendation is that if your computer gets infected -- then the ONLY safe method to get rid of the problem is to restore your computer from a good clean backup.

There are a load of good cheap 3rd party backup / restore programs --for Windows use things like Acronis

http://www.acronis.com

Keep the OS + Application programs on it's own smallish partition -- keep the data (photos etc) on separate partitions and disks.

For Windows Microsoft's FREE MSE (Miscrosoft security essentials) is a good AV program offering decent realtime protection as well and the virus definition file is updated nearly every day

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials

I would not trust ANY computer that had been cleansed only with an AV program.

Since NO AV program can ever be 100% effective -- I wouldn't trust any AV REMOVAL program to be 100% effective either.

Backup regularly and then if you do get into trouble just restore from a backup.

cheers
-k
