I do not know how you manage to focus it like that manually.
Fast lenses used wide open on not-too-distant target pose a significant AF challenge, never mind doing MF.
Peter: I had all of the latest focus upgrades installed, just before the 26 staples were put in to hold my head back together; it seems to have worked well so far...
Love the idea and proof of concept of BIF calibration shots, since it is all about timing. Just need willing fliers, bread, and remember to duck!
ThreeMileFinal: Great shot "in weather" of the Satena ATR turbo (great short-haul airwagon); was that aircraft based in Nurnberg, possibly? Where did you photograph it?
Ching: Great captures in the cold; I love the snow, but it does not love us here so far this season.
Project day for me, so little if any outside shooting time. Looking forward to seeing the postings later today.
roboticspro: Not sure where that Satena bird came from actually... it passed through with a sister ship. They were both ATR-42-500s. There's been a couple ATRs on their way back to the factory recently. That shot was taken from my desk here in Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada.
Today I went to another waterfowl shooting place by lake Ontario, which is a favourite one of many southern Ontario birders. Not much to be seen, but a few immature Trumpeters with their sooty colouring I found interesting....image #1.
Many camo clad folks sporting (flaunting) big lenses and all that. There were also some enthusiasts who wouldn't let their basic gears hinder the practice of their hobby ...see image #2.
Cam: Just gotta love gravity... nice touch with those shots...
Jerry: Looks like a very peaceful place...great job with the "locals"!
Steve: Always enjoy eagle shots...thanks for sharing.
Ernie: Still zero snow here; looks like the South takes the claim this year...nice shots of the deer.
Peter: Very funny "head shot"; I can see blue right through the schnozz! Looks like the 400mm f5.6 does you well; sharp - light and doesn't draw crowds
Too much "detail work" today...time for a break, and get the "gears" ready for a hike tomorrow...
That is a handsom lad, Cam, creatively photographed. It is some thrill to photograph children while they play and have a good time.
John, you are getting into BIFphotography big time, it would seem. Those shots I like, particularly the first one which has a water column pulling the bird back. Head on moving targets are always much more difficult to photograph.
Psych, that hawk is all wings and tail, as it soars nicely. (It would help the image a bit if you passed it thru some sort of NR. )

I'm still learning to use my T2i/400 f5.6combo to capture bald eagles in flight.
You've got your eagle good, Shiva.
It must be tough getting a very distant bird against such bright sky.
However, you've got the right tools for the job.

Funny, now that you mention it, I have sometimes wondered in head-on encounters if some birds, sharks, mantas and such critters play who-ducks-first. Wonder if they laugh when we duck first...

Yes, I have also noticed that animals play chicken with us sometimes, or they just wanna check us out, or perhaps with a mock attack they try to shoo us away from their nest etc.
However, in that sort of confrontation there are often new photo perspectives hidden.
1DsMkII + 300 f/2.8 IS MkI wide open.

On February 4th, we had -37 Celsius here in northern Sweden where I live. This picture is from that cold day. Canon EOS-1D Mark IV with 70-200 f2,8
You win.....if there was ever a true cold winter shot, yours is the one.
John, the key difference is that in your shot the bird is shading itself with its wing.
But you got the right idea. I believe that a good photography starts with a good concept.....the execution can and will be refined more easily...and soon enough.
You take care of that cold.
I have seen maybe a total of three snowflakes so far (don't think they made it to the ground),...spring is now kicking in...when will there be a Canon Spring
I live in a place with the nickname of Winterpeg, Winnipeg Canada, we've had a very un Winnipeg like winter this year, it's been mild and very little snow. I thought I would share a few.
