p.1 #1 · Another Pricing Question

The promoters of an upcoming bridge tournament have asked what I would charge to use one of my desert landscape photos as a photo op backdrop at their event. The event could host up to 1000 people and the backdrop would be 5' x 10'. I would not be responsible for producing the print. Up until this point, I've only sold prints (and only 12" x 18").

Can anyone give me an idea of a reasonable price to charge?

Thanks,

Fotoquote only goes up to 30 x 40 inches and generally the fee is around $2,500.00. Normally, the larger the image, the higher the fee but it does give you some idea of the ballpark.

Do they just want the backdrop available for folks to use their P&S and capture their own image or are they going to use and event photographer? Do they want you to handle getting the mural printed? I found a place that charges $9.95 per square foot, so it would run right at $500 for the print. I would charge a usage fee of at least half of the print cost or $250, which is really cheap.

Trying to work out what to charge is basically a completely useless waste of time.

No matter what you quote that reflects anything like the images value to YOU, the client will come back with a much lower figure which is in their budget and then it's a take it or leave it scenario.

I gaurantee if you quote anything like the $2500 the price calculator would indicate was an underquote anyway, the client will laugh, fall of their chair, dismiss you as an idiot or all 3.

Cut to the chase and forget about wasting time on calculations that will be irrelevent in the end anyway and ask the client what they are prepared to pay for the images use and then negotiate ( if you can) from there.
Your pretty much going to end up doing the same thing anyway, no use wasting time on figuring that becaomes irrelevant when it comes to the crunch.
