yeah, i don't use pinch caps for that reason, and the fear that they'll come off in a pocket or my wife's purse. all my lenses have metal screw on caps, so a step ring is a noticeable increase in size.
Cool. I've got some screw in caps that I like, too. I just get a little nervous with my ZM 35/2 and 50/1.5, because the front element is rather exposed on both of these lenses, so I like a little extra protection. I'm always worried that I'll hastily screw the screw caps on or off too fast, and then scrape the unseated cap against the front element. The front element of the 35/2 nearly looks like it bulges out past the filter threads. I got lucky that the 51mm press on caps that I ordered fit very snugly on the 49mm step up rings, so I'm not too worried about them coming off accidentally.

The CV 21/4 is what I have now to fill this gap, and I think at best it's equal to the 18-55 kit when it comes to sharpness, better CA control, better distortion control (to my eyes, I don't have any numbers), better size, better user experience. At the end of the day just not a great landscape lens, but 'ok' I suppose.
I may be worng Jacob, but the center sharpness of the CV should be way ahead of the kit in long infiinity shots. The CV is frankly breathtaking in this regard. If the kit is that good I'd like to know. (mine is on loan).
The CV 28 appears the equal of the 28 summicron at f/8. If the kit can match these two, I'd also like to know.
But I have seen terrific work fronm the kit lens--which is so funny since the unwashed at DP are convinced the 1855 is a poor lens
Here is one thing I KNOW the kit cannot do http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7165/6562198819_3c387e01e0_b.jpg
I often must shoot in this indoor arena--here the sun has just set. This is the summicron 28 at f/2 performing in a way none of my other lenses can even come close to. It's a crop, but the edges are full width.
@jmiro
thank you for the excellent link to puts. His insight gives a baseline for the glass in question--no way will we see them better than he describes their performance on film. I think his comparision of the 28cron vs ultron will hold true on the nex.
His description of lens performance is benchmark IMHO
regarding the 25/4 CV: there is simply no reason to think this lens will not be in the league of the 21/4 or 28/3.5. A few desultory comments mean nothing--every lens draws them. e.g. "I can't use the contax due to heinous bokeh" hehe.
Congratulations on your new lens, Rich! I tried it on my 5N, and it was good enough that I decided to buy it, and now Leica won't even quote a delivery time...:-(
Both Boris (bobu) and Lloyd Chambers write very highly indeed of that lens, and your second picture pretty much illustrates that! Congrats again!

I haven't shot anything with both where you can see out for a mile, but shooting things like trees at a few hundred yards away I don't see much difference other than the nice control of CA from the Voigt. In the corners the 18-55 is better. Get your kit lens back and give it a try, post a few samples.

Looking at the samples posted or linked to in this thread it looks like it has the same corner issues as the 21. From samples on the NEX I don't see any reason to believe otherwise, if the 25/4 is better than either the CV 21 or kit lens someone please post crops from the NEX.
Looking at the files from the CV 28 that were posted, I'd be happy with that performance, so long as it translates into other scenes (for anyone who didn't download the raw files they weren't perfect for drawing conclusions from)... I already have a 35 that seems close, if not equal. If I found a good enough 28 I'll ditch the 35 and get a 40 or 50 instead. I'm not going back to the CZ G though, didn't like the adapter.
I don't expect any of these lenses to be able to do what a $3000+ Sumiicron can, but it would be nice if they could out perform the kit lens.
The M-Rokkors have been mentioned here and there a few times. Any FMers have the 28 on your 5N (or the 40mm)?

Does Konica Hexanon m-mount 28mm f2.8 = M-Rokkor 28/2.8 ?
I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just not familiar with the Konica lens.
oh, no it doesn't. i just misremembered, and maybe have a natural connection in my mind between konica and minolta. another random tidbit, most minolta m 28mm lenses seem to have a white spot disease, not sure how easy it is to fix.
Thanks, I wasn't sure about it. Regardless, the Konica looks pretty good there! It's a little on the pricey side, but I'd be interested in seeing it on the 5N.
I inquired with John Van Stelten about recoating lenses with the white spot problem, his advice was that sometimes the glass is etched and cannot be repaired.

The optical formula and performance of the Konica Hexanon 28/2.8 M-mount is very similar to those of the Leica Elmarit 28/2.8 pre ASPH. I used an Hexanon 28/2.8 on my M8 a while ago and it produced excellent IQ.
Ok, here are some real use samples with the VC Skopar 28mm, ZM 25 Biogon and ZM21 4.5 Biogon. I shot all of the at f8. There are unprocessed raws, straight from my hiking trip to the south of Argentina. I did not process any of them because i) I do not have photoshop on my laptop and ii) to show how the files look without sharpening and color shift.
These are not the best compositions, but I tried to pick samples where the corners have some detail. To my eyes and taste these look pretty good (colorshift aside), especially considering the tradeoff between size and quality...

The Konica Hexanon is a fine lens, light and sharp.
I had one on the Hexar RF and it was a nice piece of glass. I realize now that I should have kept it.
Now that I looked into it... I realized I had looked at this lens before on Rockwell's site. Sounds like a nice alternative to the Leica, if not a little larger and heavier, if it can be found for a reasonable price.

I'm looking at these threads for info on the Nokton 40 1.4 on Nex 5n, but not finding anything...who has tested it? What do you think?
I have it. Works well with the 5N, but at 60mm equiv, definitely not what I would consider wide.
My feelings on it are somewhat mixed. From wide open to about f2.5 it has the classic glow to it, so it works well for people/portraits. At f2.8 it sharpens up nicely. The bokeh is a little wild. I like it. The main issue with it is lots of CA and I guess loCA (OOF tree branches turn green and red for example).
I've been considering selling it for something else with an equal amount of character, but at a lower price point (Jupiter 3 possibly). I haven't used it all that much. I posted a few photos here.
