p.1 #1 · How to tell if an lp-e6 battery is fake?

I recently bought some second hand lp-e6 batteries on ebay. Seller seemed good, was a personal seller not a company. I bought 3 batteries, 1 was a knock off (which was mentioned in the listing) and 2 were 'genuine'. My question is, how do I tell if they are actually genuine? They have no date stamp on the back which is what caused my concern...

Is there a link anywhere to images of the approved and genuine batteries? I know there can sometimes be some variation. They look pretty convincing but I'm still not sure.

I think fake chipped ones are usualy have cloned chips. so you may see the same serial number for both batteries.

The Canon website shows some examples, but I expect the counterfeiters will continue to improve the quality of their work.

If you get 3,000 shots out of one, who cares?

[edit] but seriously, how can you tell if a battery has been mangled by its previous owner? I prefer to either buy known good after market batteries or a genuine new canon battery for exactly the reasons you're not enumerating.

....and if it sinks and shorts out and gets ruined then it was real.

+1

this sort of test has worked since the Middle Ages
if something works, it works, don't try to fix it

another good test: if you charge it next to your eye and it explodes and puts your eye out then it was fake,
but don't buy from disreputable stores too often, since this test can only be done twice

The real ones don't have a date stamp, so if one of yours does, then maybe that real one is the fake.

I purchased a knockoff one knowingly and while they are good at first (1st year or so), their life is much shorter after that. My knockoff one is pretty much useless now whereas the one that came with my 2 year old 7D is still going strong.
The knockoff ones don't come with date stamps based on my experience.

Well thanks to the couple of people that gave a reasoned response. I already have 2 batteries, definitely official ones and that will do me fine for most situations. Every now and then I forget to charge one though so for 1 night every couple of months I thought I'd buy these just so I have a backup. I don't mind if they don't hold their charge perfectly etc etc, I know the reasons why and why not to buy second hand.

The question still stands, if anyone knows a reasonably reliable way to tell, I'd be very interested to know

I have two genuine batteries. One came with my 7D in Oct 2009, one I bought in February 2010. They don't look the same (sorry, this is the only image I have):

I have four of these. I bought one battery and the 7D in January 2010 and bought two more this summer.

The one that came with the camera and the one I bought initially are on the right in the top photo and on the bottom in the other photo.

The newer batteries have the date code (year and month) stamped in foil on the back.

The older batteries were made in Japan, the newer ones made in China. Canon moved production sometime in 2010. I have the same thing, three older made in Japan (further processed in China) batteries and one newer made in China with a date code.

Cheers everyone. By comparison with the photos on here they look to be genuine. there's always a slight doubt but they work and seem all in order so i'm happy with them.
