p.1 #1 · Big_IS Leica-EOS EMF adaptor stuck at f1.4
Hi all
I recently bought this adaptor from Big_Is. I'm using it to adapt a Leica Elmarit 60 f2.8 lens to my Canon 7d body. The adaptor itself is fine, fits the lens very well and mounts on the camera properly. The AF confirmation also works fine up to at least f5.6. I have no complaints with those regards.
But since the adaptor's chip is preprogrammed to 50mm and f1.4, I need to change those settings. I got the programme manaual from Big_Is:
1. Mount the adapter on the lens, and the lens on the camera
2. Make appropriate basic settings on the camera
Switch on the camera.
Make sure that the camera drive mode is set to single shooting!!!
Set the camera to Manual Exposure mode.
Set the shutter speed to 1/60 second and the exposure level increment to 1/3 EV.
3. Activate the adapter programming mode
On the camera:
adjust the aperture setting to f/64, and press the shutter button once.
adjust the aperture setting to f/57, and press the shutter button once.
adjust the aperture setting to f/64, and press the shutter button once.
4. Enter a setting
a. Select a setting mode
b. Enter the appropriate value
5. Confirm the setting, and return the adapter to normal mode
Then:
6. Set the camera to record the correct working aperture in the EXIF data, and take pictures.
But I got stuck on step 3! I cannot change the aperture setting. It's got stuck at f1.4. No matter which dials I turn it wouldn't change from f1.4.
Any suggestions from the pool of experts here? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,
After you have entered all your values (at your step #5), use f57 (press SB), f64 (press SB), f57 (press SB) to set (record) them in the chip's EEPROM.

Hi Edd
Thanks for your reply.
But I can't set the aperture to f57, f64, f57. That's the problem. In fact, other than f1.4 which is the default aperture setting, I can't change to any other value at all. This is all under M mode and shutter speed set to 1/60 of sec. There seems just no way I can change the aperture value on my camera.

Okay,
The 64-57-64 allows you to enter the programming mode. The next setting f2.0 sets up the focal length selection, so 2.0=0, 2.2=1, ect up to 5.6=9. You need 5 place holders, i.e. 50mm is 2.0, 2.0, 2.0, 3.5, 2.0. Then you enter f57 (SB), f64 (SB), f57 (SB) to record them. Next, 64-57-64 then f2.0 enters the max f-stop mode, so set the camera to whatever it is, i.e. f2.5, then do the 57-64-57 sequence as before to record. The next selection 64-57-64 followed by f2.5 is for micro-adjust...stay clear from that one unless you have PLENTY of time on your hands.

I am in a lab away from my normal gear (including a 7D), so I can't do a hands-on "talk -you-through" until tonight (~ 5:00PM EST), but if you can wait, I will give it a try.
Just a thought: Is the camera LCD displaying f1.4 and not 00? If you are not getting a readout, the EMF chip is not really talking to the camera electronics...

Hi Edd
Thanks again for the replies. I will be sticking around a bit to see if I can catch you later.
I've got the ideas of how to activate the programming mode. Trouble is I can't seem to get that activation to work. In other words, I can't set f/64,f/57,f64 on my canon 7d under M mode. The aperture setting is frozen to f/1.4 if you see what I mean. The camera LCD screen displays f/1.4 at all time no matter what dial/wheel I turn. I think somehow the EMF chip isn't set to enable aperture changes...

I got an EF to C/Y adapter with EMF chip and had no problems programming it.
@wheeljack: Do you have the power switch to the right mode (not to ON, but the one beyond that)? If you have it set to ON, the rear control wheel is disabled in M mode, so you can't set the aperture. In Av mode, EC (exposure compensation) is disabled as well then, but you can set the aperture with the front control wheel.

Hi Wheeljack,
Looks like you have one of the "locked" chips, considering that I'm pretty certain that you have done all the right things, and they have not panned out for you. Not much more can be done at this point.

Forgive my ignorance. Can I ask what benefit these programming will bring to us? A correct FL and max aperture in the EXIF?
I am using 50D and have tried a few adapters including EMF ones from BIG_IS. What bother me most about these adapters is that the camera will tend to over exposure when I stop down the aperture. The more I stop down, the more the over exposure.
My current procedure is that
- stop down the lens aperture and use the AE lock
- let the camera aperture to stay at its maximum
In fact I have tried
- programming the EMF to be in line with the len's physical max aperture.
- set the camera aperture to the same on the lens.
and any combination I can think of.
But none of these procedures will get a correct exposure when stopping down.
I never have the same problem on my Sony. Exposure is always spot-on.

Which Sony, a NEX? They do metering from the sensor so it should be more accurate. You might get the same result when you meter with your 50D in live view mode.
The benefit of the EMF chip is that you can record the shooting aperture (by setting it on the camera) and not only the maximum aperture. If you leave the aperture setting on the camera to the maximum setting, there is no reason to use AE lock. The only thing you can do is dial in some negative exposure compensation (EC). The further you stop down, the more EC you'll need to get a correct exposure. At f/11 you may need -1.5 stops EC. At f/5.6 maybe -1 stop EC. Wide open, the metering should be fairly correct. Just look at the histogram and see how much EC is needed. In time you'll learn the pattern.

I was talking about Sony DSLR, A350.
I use spot metering and AV mode and hope that my 50D would come up with a shutter speed that well exposes the picture. I know I can set EV and trial and error. But some scenes have no second chances that do not allow guesswork.
I have also tried adapter ring without any chip on it and use M-mode. The result is the same. Over-exposure when stopping down. So the problem is not with the EMF chip or whatever chip. The problem was due to some way Canon does its metering...

Yeah, Canon DSLRs are not designed for stop down metering. If you don't get second chances for your shots, adapted manual lenses are not a good idea for Canon bodies. The best you can do is, like I said, predict the necessary amount of EC needed to get correct exposure. It's related to the aperture you choose.

You need to contact Big_IS and let him know the problem. He's very supportive, only problem is the turn around time is always aleast a day for a message.
So if you put everything clearly in one email with pictures of the adapter you've received, hopefully he can figure out you've been sent the wrong adapter and he would send you a replacement. That's what I did and got a replacement, although takes another 2 weeks to come through.
Good luck!
