If the D800 as 36 MP, then I just can't imagine what their line up and strategy is. Nothing fits. There'd would be nothing to draw anyone to a flagship D3x, so that would disappear of the line up.
Maybe well see a D700s announced as well then, because not everyone needs or wants 36MP.

Just seems odd for the D700 replacement to have such a high pixel count. You'd think that it would be 18MP or something like that to keep the high ISO crown.
I guess we'll know a lot more in a couple of weeks.

I agree, 36MP? I like the fact that my 12mp D700 produces sharp, noise free images in a 12mb .NEF file. I've already made amazing looking 24" x 36" prints from my D700. I understand that storage is cheap, but working with massive files is a turn off for me. 14 or 16mp seems like a more natural progression for a Nikon sensor.

Nikon rumors is generally pretty darn accurate in their rumor mongering.
I gotta say though, there's plenty iffy about those images. The red swoosh is different than all the other Nikons, the PC port cover is the old style from the D300 not the style of the D700.
The red swoosh is very similar to that on the D5100, Nikon's newest DSLR. The PC port cover is the same as on the D3x, D300s, and D3s, Nikon's three newest pro cameras. I'm not saying it's not fake, but in neither of those aspects does the image differ from what I'd expect on the actual D800.

JackSorry no he didn't.
And if anyone wants to look through his "D700 replacement is coming posts" , let me know how long he's been saying the he's 99% sure the D700 replacement is coming next week. Yes, he'll get there eventually.
Actually, he's been saying he's 99% sure it will be 36MP. He had another post with a 90% confidence of a few more specs. I don't believe he's EVER had a confidence level on the release or announcement. He did say he EXPECTED it (no %age) to be announced in the next 30-60 days (from Oct 3), but that was before the flood delays.

On the D7000, the end of the focus mode switch is a button that allows you to change the AF-area and AF mode with the control dials while holding it down:
In the Steve Jobs biography, Steve realized selling iPods that were Windows compatible would increase sales so much that iPods would make Apple more money than Macs. So super awesome products can make a company extremely profitable even if those awesome products cost significantly less than flagships. If the D800 has 36MP it will sell so well that it won't matter whether or not anyone purchases D3's. And if Canon doesn't match the D800 with the forthcoming 5D then Nikon will dominate the market in the next few years. D800's will be the camera of choice for new photographers, many Nikon faithful, and even photographers who or seduced to switch from Canon. If the 36MP's are clean and Canon doesn't match it, then Nikon wins the game.

In don't know, whatever.!
I agree - there has to be a lower MP count FX body in there somewhere . . . D700s would be fine by me.

I think a D3x sensor with 8-10 fps, similar high ISO performance (and price point) as the D700 would sell better. The current specs seem aimed mostly at landscapers. Sports togs will want more than 6fps and better high ISO performance and I don't think most wedding togs need 36MP do they? If it was just about MP's Nikon would have been stuffed long ago.

Exactly !
I don't think Nikon expected the 700 to be such a big seller.
While i won't buy this camera because i'm pretty much mentally stuck with crop until I find another pile of cash to get all non-crop lenses
Let us hope this is a photoshop job. They're taking out one key lever I always use got chopped off. The Focus selection switch Multi>Group>Point.
Seriously how many photographers will keep flipping back and forth between video and Still.. Unless they're going to feature this thing in some lame Ashton Kutcher commercial.
And I'll assume the D300 replacement will go down the same path if it is real and make me sad..

Why? More pixels does NOT increase noise per image height. That's a myth that should have been busted long time ago. And if you don't like large files, you could probably choose to scrap a lot of information by diminishing them in-camera.
Asking for a new, lower resolution camera is like asking for a new, slower computer.
As I see it, everything with these specs fits. More of everything in a smaller body = progress.
Seriously, do not want. This is 3.5 years of progress in a key differentiating area for this camera over canon? Is this 2011? When do we get af points covering the frame and more than one line of cross sensors, 2020?
The image of the camera appears to be a life sized image. I've taken some measurements and everything seems to line up almost exactly with my D7k. Right down to the size of the buttons.
The rumor states a slightly larger display. According to my measurements this isn't the case. Unless of course they are talking about the top display which can't be measured in the images given.
If this an actual picture of the D800, one can extrapolate from D7k's design that the AF selector should be right below the lens release button on the side of the lens mount.
36mp would be interesting. Not sure if the current lens line up will be able to handle this MP beast. Currently my d3x requires perfect glass and perfect technique. I can hear the forums now about countless people complaint how they can get consistently sharp pictures.
36MP is perfect for me if the pixels are similar to the D7000, though I'm sure some will be screaming it does not do well enough at the high ISOs. Has Nikon they switched production from Thailand to another facility or will the announcement be for availability in Q2 2013?
