It's 144 bucks, built better than the 50 1.8, and has iq that's very good for the price.
I would almost consider getting an 18-55 is to go with it as a travel kit.

Yes it does...it is also surprisingly optically good. Don't go comparing it to a $2k 70-200/2.8L but as a (very compact & light) travel lens and/or a 'starter' zoom it can't be beat for that price and it is Image Stabilized too! I'm going on a family vacation next week...there's no way I'm lugging a 5D or 7D with a 70-200/2.8 and a couple of young kids to a theme park...I'm taking a T2i body & the 55-250...compact, light, and very good IQ...can't be beat!

I am verrrry happy with my 50 1.8. Bokeh sucks, but other than that... So I guess this lens was really worth it.
