Was just wondering, is the output of the 430 Mk II Speedlite ok to use with the Canon 100mm USM Macro (For Butterfly and dragon shots) or is the 580 EX II a better choice?
I'd rather not pay the extra for the 580 if its over kill.
I have both flashes, and if I fire both of them at full power, then I get about 2/3rds of a stop more from the 580exII. Ive found 580exII recyles slightly faster at matching power levels, and can take external power packs.
I have both as well. The power difference is not as much as you'd think. If you search here, some folks have done some tests and have some numbers, but I think the biggest difference I've ever seen was around 1 stop. Its features that make the big difference in cost. The 430 can't be used as a master/controller, and can only be adjusted to 1/64 power instead of 1/128.
If you can use manual flash, you might even look at the Lumopro 160 or similar. They are cheaper and have more of the features of the 580, EXCEPT the ability to use the ETTL stuff.
You don't need much power for macro shots do you? Most ring lights are actually pretty low guide number flashes. I think the two you mention are about a stop to 2/3 of a stop in difference as already mentioned. I would guess both would give you more than enough power for butterfly shots. You could look into an actual ring light also if you are using it strictly for macro shots these would give you more even light.
I already use the Canon MT24-EX with my MP-E 65mm which is perfect for the job.
Going to 100mm the working distance is going to be further out and the MT24 is not going to do the job as far as I know.
I already own a Sigma 530 DG but am very unhappy with this for a number of reasons:
a) The build quality is shoddy. It wobbles in the shoe and in the shoe of the off camera cord and it used to fit perfectly a few weeks ago but with heavy use has become loose.
b) I have found the MT24 electronics better than the Sigmas.
c) Changing settings on the Canon MT24 seems easier.
d) Sigmas flash drains batteries fast (Not sure if this is unique to itself) even when on -1 FEC ETTL on flash, same batteries in the MT24 last quite a while.
I can't imagine any work at Macro distance needing all the power of a 430 let alone a 580. I own both. Both have adequate power to light a decent sized room (10x20) with bounce. If you start applying modifiers your mileage may vary, but the difference between the two is 2/3 to a stop at most.
Unless you need the extra master functions of the 580 I wouldn't bother.
EDIT: Thinking about the way a lot of macro work is done, two might be a good idea for evenness.
