Kurt, I just rifled through your photos again, that deflector works so very well, I enjoy how if gives a great deal of softened light where there should be shadow and dark points. May I ask what one of those generally run cost wise? I havent seen one at any of the stores here in town. That 35mm 1.4 dworked outstanding, gave you very nice background blur. I think my next lens is going to be the 16-35mm 2.8 L USM, would you agree this would be a good lens for this style of photography or would you still prefer the fixed 35mm with huge aperture of 1.4? I am assuming this is the lens you are using? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=162614&is=USA
I love doing this kind of stuff Linda, just haven't had the time lately.
I go in spurts with it I guess.
Ben,
I think that reflector was about $110 or so. Can't remember exactly, but somewhere around there.
I used to own the 16-35 and now have a new 17-40.
I only used the 35 focal length because of the FAST apeture.
I wouldn't use the 16-35 2.8 for something like this.
It's a great lens, but I only used a wide lens in this situation because of the look this lens gives at 1.4, 1.6 or 1.8. Shooting it over a 2.2 would waste it's great quality, to an extent, for people/portraits anyway....
Normally, I use the 85 1.8 at about a 2.2 or 2.6 f stop for portrait work.
If I start doing more of this again, I'd buy the 135 2.0L as well.
Hope that explained it.....
Kurt, this series is exceptional. I don't think the lighting could have been better on any of them. The behind the scenes shots are something I wish were more common here as it is such an awesome way for the newer photographers to learn. Thanks for taking the time to add those in an addition. I just got the 35/2 so hopefully it's performance wide open will be somewhere close to the 35/1.4 although I think I'm a little too optimistic on that one.
nice work...it's so refreshing to see a 'natural' model (she just seems to be herself, relaxed not putting on any show ) the work stands out just because of its simplicity - doesn't need typical model poses and other gadgets.
i have to try out this reflector, did you buy it or did you make it yourself?
