p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 1D X Feature Set Pros & Cons

Which individual feature of the new 1D X do you find to be the most satisfying or disappointing for you?

With the specs and feature set of the 1D X announced, I have arbitrarily picked 10 features (5 pro & 5 con) that I think represent the major changes in the new 1D X. I have left out the performance of the new AF & metering systems because they are impossible to gauge simply on specs alone but are assumed to be better and no one should complain about improved AF & metering.

Remember, this Poll is to pick the one individual feature that 'makes or breaks it' for you!

I like having full frame. 1.3x was an interesting crop factor, but I won't bemoan its demise.

Why can't I tick multiple boxes? I'd tick 3 of the con boxes 1 or 2 pro boxes.

Size.
Still just want a 5D size with 11 points that can focus well, no more, no less.
I dont really see any cons other than that.

Exactly right.

In the past, I've been guilty of using any excuse I could find to buy a new 1-series body. This time, with the 1D X, I'd love to be able to use things like improved high ISO performance, improved MA capabilities with zoom lenses, and a potentially better AF system to convince myself to spend some money on the body. But, as a long lens user, the loss of pixel density compared to the 1D Mark IV and the inability to focus with aperture combinations smaller than f5.6 would be a move several steps backward from the 1D Mark IV for the kind of shooting that I do.

I guess I can thank Canon for creating a camera that makes it easy for me to resist sending $7000 more their way.

And for me there'd be another $12-13K hit for a 600 or 800 to negate the loss of reach and AF @ f/8

It'll be interesting to see its low light performance, and what a surprise with a 6.95 micron sensor!

Let's hope the sensor is bigger than 6.95um, as that's smaller than the rubbish they put in most P&S cameras

I picked "CON: f/5.6 Limited AF" that really worries me. I use the 2x with the 600/4 and 500/4 all the time.

Second worry would be a higher MP option. I have a medium format digital solution - it's wonderful. I would like the option to jump to a 35mm solution that has medium format digital qualities to get the best of both worlds in some cases, not all the time. I just wonder if Canon is planning on these options in the future or not.

As far as the high ISO / low light performance the ID X looks like a winner.

pretty much sums it for this now "focal length limited" 500mm owner--even with the 1.4 welded to the lens

PRO: NO ARTICULATED LCD SCREEN! (Too easy to break off under crowded shooting conditions)

CON: ULTRA HIGH ISO CAPABILITY! (NO ONE NEEDS ISOs SO FREAKIN' HIGH!!)

- Loss of 1.3x isn't big as I can crop in computer
- f/5.6 limited AF sucks cause I need more than 800mm IS for avian
- Articulating LCD means one more thing to break off a camera used in the wilds
- Appropriately priced for what it does.
- 18MP is more than enough that I do not need to buy a 2012 Mac
- Main draw…. ultra high ISO
- Better video's a plus
- I hope Canon allows you to slow down from 14fps and 12fps to something slow cause I don't want to delete so many files at the same time

Wish it had built-in GPS like that darn PowerShot S100 cause for $6,800 it should already!

A prosumer Sony A77 body has GPS built-in!

True (possibly)…'Pixel Perfect' mentioned that to me as well in another thread and it does make sense. Still, I think alot people would have liked it…at least one that tilts down for over-head shooting.

Well, that's out of left field for a 'Con'…you don't HAVE to use high ISO if you don't want to.

I don't see $6,800 worth of changes. I will stick with my Mark IV and a 5D Mark II as my backup.

I love its extra low light capability. During poorly lit church weddings it will be real winner.

Well compared to a 1Ds III, it pretty much blows it away. 3MP in res is nothing. If this is not worth $6800, then 1Ds III is not worth $5800, but is still $7K and was $8K. So it's better value than it could have been seeing US dollar is in the toilet. But it's a bitter pill for those that have been the 1D non s series, as it's a 40% price increase on an already expensive camera.

One of three things has likely happened:

1. Canon marketing has blundered and they don't understand the full capabilities of the body and it can indeed focus at f/8.

2. Canon has done this by design so that photographers are forced to spend more money on faster (and/or longer) glass in order to have the ability to use autofocus with the reach that they need for given FL subjects.

3. There are technical reasons with this body which prevented focusing at f/8 to be easily implemented.

It's hard to know which of the three reasons are in play, or a combination of them. Regardless, I think that this is a fundamental shortcoming of the body which WILL cut into potential sales. Hopefully in can be "fixed" before the body goes into full production!

"Houston, we have a problem..."
