frezeiss: thanks for info on the Nokton. A little pricy and a little to long focale, but definetly a handsome piece of glass. And I am slowly trying to adapt that the NEX with these otherwise exceptionally good lenses wont make up the FF experience. On the other hand - for me being new to Zeiss - they introduce other very attractive aspects :-)

wstam: I've been using the 28/2.8 intensely for two weeks, I have not experienced what you show, looks almost like a bit of your palm covering the lens (??)

ocean: absolutely amazing mountain shots. Next time dont cut the legs of that poor guy in #3 though :-). Again, great shots and #2 is serious wall material.

You really know how to make that combo sing, Ocean! And you solved a dilemma for me. Thanks!

wfrank: Thank you for your comments on #3.

philber: Thank you again!

I was very fond of Contax G lenses in the films days. I thought G lenses were the best 35mm lenses that Zeiss made at the time. As I slowly transition out of film, I kept all the G lenses hoping that one day I am able to use them on digital body. I had some expensive m4/3 adapter but the 2x focal length didn't really work for me. Now enter the Sony NEX 5N - I am very happy with the image quality from NEX 5N. While I have tried other lenses including Nikon Ais, Olympus OM, Zeiss ZF, and CV, I always come back to Contax G lenses as they are just special!

Sorry, will borrow this thread to raise a question related to my Contax G 28mm lens.

Occasionally I encountered the problem where part of the photo turn out darken, especially when aperture at f2.8. Example:

The dark patch is alway at the bottom frame if I hold the camera horizontally. Unfortunately this problem just came and gone. It just showed up in some photos and disappeared during the same shooting session. When I deliberately trying to reproduce it, I couldn't get it.

I am using Kipon adapter on this lens. I am not sure if it's related to the adapter. I have just

This might be due to the Shutter. I have similar problems with my Nex-3 at 1/4000 and 1/3200, only much worse. I can only safely go up to 1/1000s.

My shutter count is at approximately 18k. On Nex it's times 2 so effectively 36k shutter actuations. Haven't sent it for repair as I bought it in Hong Kong and couldn't find the original receipt.

Hi Nanh. You may have pointed to the actual problem. I have just checked. Those photo with this problems are mostly at 1/4000 shutter speed. Few less serious ones are at 1/3200 or 1/2000.

So did you get the problem fixed by Sony? What is the lens you used? I am wondering if it only happens with certain lenses. Now that I know this may be the cause, I will see if I can reproduce it.

Thanks a lot for the pointer. It helps a lot. Cheers.

Too much,.. is how much money I've spend on Zeiss lenses, be it ZF or ZM. Its a long slippery road indeed for you

I'm already slipping, this is my kit now, 28, 45 & 90

So now I am going for a fast WA below 25, but that will be no G. Sadly I have no good options at hand right now :-(

The WA option with Zeiss glass that I can think of is the Zeiss 18/4 zm. But that's very pricey. I have been using the Sony 16/2.8 and I am happy with it. Sony's built-in software correction also helps.

For shallow DOF, CV 35mm f1.2 II should be pretty good.. but its not wide-angle on NEX, rather normal lens (50mm F1.8 - 2 equiv.).

.. or get a G2 to have "true" 28mm and then you are set. In Zeiss land a ZM18 is waiting for you

Lightshow; threads like these tend to drive up the prices on used gear so for all of us:
Bid Low. Just kidding, but kidding aside: some people tend to think that finding a G lens is a rare find and then go to just about any length to pick one up thinking it is the "last chance" before they are all out of the market. But, even in a small country like mine, G lenses and camera kits with a few lenses pop up a few times a month and if you exclude the ads where people ask outrageous prices for the lenses only you can make a true find every now and then.

As an example I helped a friend get a kit of G2, 28/45/90 and flash - all black, which is even more exotic for us alt users - for $800 not too long ago. That should put things in perspective.

I managed to pick up a 45 and a 90 in very good condition for chump change. And I turned down a G28/2.8. Word isn't really out yet that they can be successfully converted. Let's keep it hush-hush for a few months more until we've all stocked up.

Henrik, what I found a little strange is the fact that I got my 45 and 90 from out of Germany - one form the UK and one from France. Somehow prices in Germany are on the high side right now, at least those in the bay.

Yes, I think it is best to source them from where ever the price is "right".

There is a kit, like new, with 28/45/90 and G2 for $1300 here in Sweden which popped up yesterday. Seller claims only five rolls have gone through it, an elderly gentleman.

I have seen prices down to $900 with four lenses and a G2. Considering they do pop up from time to time I would much rather wait and pay $350 for a G2 with a 28 than pay $350 for the lens alone. Even if it meant I'd perhaps only use the G2 once. And in the odd event that anyone would want one I could practically give it away and make someones day.

Patience is key. But with G lenses I think they can be found fairly quick, once I decided to source them up again I found the 45 and 90 in less than five days, locally. After that even more have popped up and some are asking a little too much and some are selling for chump change. There is a full black kit out now, with 21/28/35/45 and 90mm lenses.

Regarding patience, I have none Probably overpayed some, but at least I am below current ebay deals (ww) and mine are all spotless and had original leather bags, all covers etc.

Henrik, you have to let me in on where you find all these things locally. And I am keen to try that ZM, but if it's F/4 I wonder what I would do with such thing. Perhaps a coffee & Nick Brandt on Sunday, as it looks my kid will be away all day. Supposedly there are some rain forest shots available at "the press club" if you already seen Nick

Question for everybody with experience with the G system - do the focus issues go away? It seems some have good experiences, and you never hear back from the people experiencing sticky focus issues. Is it mostly user error/bad adapter?

Would you recommend the G 90 for somebody shooting candids or should I save up for an Elmarit in the future?

I know a regular poster here loves the G 90mm. I haven't had much chance to use mine much yet but I am enamored with the results of both the 28mm and 45mm.

As far as sharpness, micro contrast, and just fine details go, I can't imagine it gets much better in 35mm photography. The bokeh though is only so so, the 45mm bokeh does show geometric patterns even slightly stopped down.
