I only use online backup for the final images that the bride receives. I keep the RAW files offsite as well until they are processed. My online backup is through livedrive.com, it's about 12 bucks a month for unlimited storage. You can just dump stuff up there or have it backup certain folders on your hard drive, much like Carbonite.

I have thought about backing up to a cloud but I wonder why everyone is uploading their RAWs and JPEGs without encryption. Is it that save? Isn't there the usual problem of data leaks? Whatdoyouthink?

Just want to chime in and say Backblaze has been working for me as well. I'm in my 3rd year of using it and I've had no problems. The price is great—I pay annually, so it's only $50/year.
I actually had to do an entire upload recently because I upgraded my computer. It took 19 days (started on 9/14, ended on 10/1) to upload 440 GB of data, so about 23 GB/day. I definitely don't add more than 23 GB/day, so after my initial backup was complete, I know that my data is backed within a day.

Then you must have a special line in to Backblaze when you upload. I have a very fast broadband connection and uploaded about 120GB in a month. Then I gave up. Backblaze also say that you will get 2-4 GB upload a day if you have a fast connection. And you can try the speed on their website. I just did that and got the the speed they say (2-4GB)
Even if getting your speed it would take two days to upload a 32GB SDHC or CF card

It seems that upload speed is the biggest issue in such a cloud-based service.
I'm pretty sure their business model factors this in. They know that most users
that really need to backup a 1TB drive are not going to wait through 100+ days
of slow upload to get the data uploaded.
For the user who has been adding data to their drives little by little, with cloud backup
already active, this is a great deal. For someone like me who has 600MB or more of
photos and a 0.43Megabit/sec. upload speed, this translates to around 4.5 GB per day,
and around three months just to get it uploaded.
One solution is simply to have it only upload directories that have photos I'm likely to
care about in the end. In fact, I should just bite the bullet and delete a lot of my
directories, because the photos therein will never be grieved over anyway if they were
lost. It's a lot of hassle to sort through them, however.

I've been using Backblaze for a few days now for the free trial and it's nice to have a really easy to use off-site backup in addition to in-house backups on external drives. It's also nice to have web access to download any of the files as needed.
Regarding upload speed, I've done about 100 gb in the past 3 days (leaving the computer running 24/7) and have about 1.37 TB total to upload, so it'll take over a month to upload, but I'm in no rush. It's great to have off-site storage to use so easily.
Compared to SmugVault (Smugmug) for storing RAWs, 1TB is $140/month. Uploading that to Smugmug costs $110. Downloading all that information back will cost you $160.
Backblaze is $50/YEAR. Not per month. Per year. and they don't charge you per gig to upload/download. Definitely a better deal on storage in the cloud than Smugmug...

Heh, that 'speed test' app is just that an internet speed test app. Not what you can upload to them in any sustained rate. It's a test of your bandwidth, nothing more.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 56435 kbps (7054.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 6142 kbps (767.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Thu 13 Oct 2011 09:19:30 PM EST
A connection of 6142 kbps upload would backup:
64779 MB in a day <----------------- Never going to happen!

Sure you can... Leave it running in the background for a month or two and you're set. It takes a while, certainly, but it works...
They have a speed test app where you can see how quick your upload is to their server.
Depending on your upload speed, it may or may not make sense.
Yes I know. But it don't really work to test the speed you get when uploading to their site. But Backblaze also write on their website that you will get 2-4 GB data uploaded per day with a fast internet connection
Also remember that it will takes months to download your data if you need that after loosing everything.
There is a reason these sites have a very low price for their backup service
