Thanks for that link Mike, that is an excellent starting point for me. Finally have gotten up the courage to really start making some photos of some teens in our area. After going through most of your work, I must say I like the way your style flatters your subjects.
I have to ask though, for most of your outdoor work, do you bring a flash with you, a reflector, anything? Reason I ask is that your lighting so superbly makes the shot that other than us photo nerds, nobody else would recognize the craftsmanship and splendid us of light. I am looking for a "generally I bring this with me" answer.
Again, thank you for that link. I could have actually asked the same question as the OP, time to get the camera and one of the victims....er, I mean kids out this weekend.

Gawd - I must be old. The photos are super, to be sure, but is that how 14-year-olds dress? Not if she was my daughter!
Yes, opinions on that are going to break along age lines, but that does not make it right. Many of her outfits are cute and appropriate for a girl of her age. But the black stockings and ultra short dress don't say anything to the innocence and cuteness of youth, or the sophistication of young adulthood. They say "I may only be 15 but I am dressed for seduction and sex". I don't blame the girl, but her mother should be appalled. The problem is she probably is not and sees it as harmless fun for her and her little girl, thus ignorant of the big-picture disservice it does to all girls/young women.
So now, Sharona, you and I both have a target on our back and we will no-doubt be blasted by the liberal, free will, no-right-and-wrong-absolutes set. Oh well, I guess I'll go back to taking my arthritis pills and washing them down with Geritol, gather up my Snuggie and turn up the sound on my Lawrence Welk and All In The Family reruns.
(Actually, at almost 57 years old, I have a HS varsity game to shoot tonight before helping my 17 year old son get ready for the Homecoming dance tomorrow night. I love kids and you CAN be a positive roll model for moral values without being a cranky evangelistic SOB).
Two more points:
1. Assuming the name on that gallery is her real name, and assuming Google or others have cached the pages of Mike's gallery, her friends, prospective employers, university grant evaluation committees, or some date-rape defendant's attorney can now access the fact that she has been dressing like a slut since she was 15 . Perfect! I wonder if mom has thought that through?
2. The photography and processing in this gallery is excellent!
EDIT: To further make a point, a quick look at Mike's blog tells me what city he lives in. So now I know the young girl's location, her first name, and based on information on Mikes site and a little digging on the internet (including Facebook) I'll bet I can find this young lady's school, last name, and address. The problem is, if I can do it, so can some homicidal perv who now knows what she looks like in CFM stockings. Thanks mom!
Well I guess everyone has their own perspective on things.
I happen to know she is a very sweet girl and couldn't be further from what you are describing. I don't think like that but obviously some people do.
Her skirt is no shorter than a pair of shorts.
If you weren't aware that 15 year old girls dress like that...you may want to get out and have a look around.

I don't doubt that she is a very sweet girl... who thinks it is appropriate for women in general to dress like that in public and for her in particular. How did she come to think like that? This was not an accident. Nothing about any of her outfits was casually overlooked. Everything she wore was a conscious choice. Unless she has a significant part time job MOM BOUGHT THOSE CLOTHES FOR HER. There's your answer. Mom's concept of appropriate clothing has now become hers. In the words of Crosby Stills and Nash - Teach Your Children Well.
Volleyball shorts are even shorter than that. So because they are okay, then a skirt that short open at the bottom is ok?
I am not trying to start a flame war here Mike. But you are saying: 1. Because we (you, her, her mom, everyone like her) do not think it is wrong then it is not wrong. And, 2. Everyone does it so it is okay.
Sorry. Can't accept that.
I know for sure I am in the minority on this and other values, personal responsibility, right/wrong issues so maybe I am the odd man out in 2011 America. If so I mourn what we have lost and am ashamed of what we have become.
I shot my granddaughter & friends at her house for the home coming dance (she is a freshman) and was amazed at what the five girls were wearing,, five inch heels and dressed to kill,, skin tight, low tops, some short and some normal length but they all certainly exceeded anything I was expecting,, all the parents were there and thought the girls looked fabulous,,
I'm 71 this month and know times have changed but WOW, they sure like to look sexy,,
they didn't look that way when I was in school but the hormones were the same back then as they are now,,
I do not recall freshmen girls at my school with a great shape and big boobs,, they just develop earlier now and displaying a tad of what you have seems to be the norm,,
I shoot my GDs volleyball games and see many high school kids every week and the daily school attire has me doing double takes,,
speaking of the VB shorts I see on the court, I now know where the camel toe photo started,,

- I know, I sound like the clothes police.
Every night when I go to sleep I thank God my children were both boys. In his infinite wisdom God gives us what we can handle. I guess even God thought it was a bad idea for me to have daughters.

Well in pretty much all states in the US the past conduct of the alleged rape victim is irrelevant during a trial. They are not allowed to present past history of the alleged rape victim.

This implies that some person is going to become so infatuated with someones photo that they are going to do all that research, then travel to her location, and then do bad things. Like that is realistic! When they could just take a trip to the local mall and see much more scantily clad young women and then stalk them.
Sorry some of this stuff just makes me laugh in the absurdity
